Midsommar

I quite enjoyed, but didn’t necessarily love Ari Aster’s debut, Hereditary, but I’m still very much sold on this. It’s like we’re already getting the Fyre Festival horror movie that was inevitable at some point. I’m curious if the white bars will be kept for the film. I hope so because it’s an interesting aesthetic choice, and I’m surprised something like that hasn’t been done, at least in the mainstream. I dig the cast, Florence Pugh already killed it with Fighting With My Family, and this looks like it could be a fun ride.

Midsommar will hit theaters on August 9th.

Someone Great

Not a whole lot I can really say about it, but it does look fun. I dig the cast, there’s some moments that made me laugh, it seems charming as hell. I’m not too familiar with the work of writer/director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, but from what I heard, her MTV show, Sweet/Vicious, was quite good. So, this is something I’ll keep my eye out for.

Someone Great will stream on Netflix on April 19th.

Late Night

I heard a lot of great things about this from Sundance. It’s great to see a movie not only starring someone of South Asian descent, but also written and directed by them. Even if the South Asian specificity doesn’t seem to be that emphasized, it will be cool to see this. Plus, I find the world of late night comedy to be pretty interesting, so to get a look at how everything operates will be neat. It just seems like a lot of fun, I’m happy to see someone like Mindy Kaling create a space for herself and her creativity to flourish. And, I mean, Emma Thompson as a late night host, come on, how can I not be immediately sold by that?

Late Night will open in theaters on June 7th.

Tolkien

Remember when I talked about the teaser, and I felt a bit hopeful in the sense that this doesn’t look like it will be just another standard biopic? Well, scratch that. Aside from some potentially interesting cross-cutting between events in his life and some solid cinematography, this just looks like another standard biopic. Oh, well. At least, it doesn’t look boring, and I suppose if you don’t know much about Tolkien, then this could provide some interesting context, provided they don’t go full Bohemian Rhapsody and change history willy-nilly. I do hope it’s good.

Tolkien opens in theaters on May 10th.

Framing John Delorean

I mean, just a few seconds in, and they already got something wrong. There was a film that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival called Driven that was about the investigation that led to Delorean’s arrest, but I guess it didn’t get picked up by any distributor for whatever reason, despite solid word of mouth. Admittedly, this looks pretty cool too, even if it seems like Errol Morris light with this documentary/narrative hybrid style. Still could be interesting though.

Framing John Delorean will open in select theaters and VOD platforms on June 7th.

Brightburn

I was totally sold by the teaser, so I didn’t even need this trailer to sell me on it further, but man, this is a damn good trailer. This looks so twisted and gnarly, and it looks like it has that dark sense of humor that I loved about James Gunn’s earlier work, which I guess he shares with his brother and cousin, who wrote this. It just looks like a lot of fun, I can’t wait.

Brightburn will open in theaters on May 24th.

Game Of Thrones: Season 8

I hope the finale pisses everyone off. I really hope it does, and frankly, it wouldn’t be that far off brand for the show. I probably said this before, but I’ll go ahead and repeat here, I’m mostly a casual fan. I really enjoy watching it, it’s entertaining and well made, but I’m not that devoted to it, hell, I can’t even remember half the characters’ names. So, I’m not quite as bittersweet about the show coming to an end as I suspect most fans are. The trailer is pretty good, if typical for what you’d expect a trailer for a finale to be like. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how this whole things concludes.

The final season of Game Of Thrones will begin airing on HBO on April 14th.
