Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil

I admire a lot of what Maleficent did, its ideas are pretty ballsy, but I found the execution of those ideas sorely lacking. However, despite my disappointment, I am very interested to see how they follow that up with a sequel. Plus, I’m always up for more Michelle Pfeiffer, so that’s cool. Also, did you see that outfit in the end? That thing is giving me the vapors.

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil will open in theaters on October 18th.

Judy

I’m really into this. Judy Garland’s story is pretty harrowing stuff, and while I’m not sure exactly how much this will cover, I am curious to see what they explore here because there are so many aspects of Garland’s life that is ripe for the biopic treatment, even if it does look like it’s going to stick to the same basic formula of these movies. Renée Zellweger is great, and it’s great to see her coming back to the screen in recent years.

Judy will hit theaters on September 27th.

The Mountain

I’m not that familiar with the works of Rick Alverson, who made films like The Comedy and Entertainment, but this looks really good. It just brings a sense of uneasiness throughout the whole thing. The cast looks great, and I’m glad to see Jeff Goldblum in something where it seems like he’s playing an actual character and not a version of himself – as delightful as that can be sometimes. I’m looking forward to this one.

The Mountain will open in select theaters on July 26th.

Always Be My Maybe

Sorry, Randall Park, when Keanu enters the game, you gotta let it go. Man, this looks fun. Yeah, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be re-inventing the wheel or anything, but the cast is super charming. I haven’t seen much of Ali Wong’s standup, aside from the occasional clip here and there, but she looks great here. I had a few good laughs, especially with that reveal in the end. Kinda wish they went with an R-rating, but I guess it doesn’t need it. I’m looking forward to checking this out.

Always Be My Maybe will open in select theaters and be available on Netflix on May 31st.

Angel Has Fallen

What’s weird about this franchise is how each film has had a pretty different creative team behind each installment, and they still manage to produce forgettable throwback fluff. I haven’t been too enthusiastic about this series despite it being in my general wheelhouse. But then again…Nick Nolte is playing Gerard Butler’s dad…that’s…I’ll admit, that is mighty tempting. But what’s weirdly bugging me is that it’s called Angel Has Fallen, and yet, there is not a single shot of Air Force One here. Are they saving it for the climax? Seems odd. I don’t know, I can’t say I’m expecting much, but like with everything else, I’ll give it a chance.

Angel Has Fallen will release in theaters on August 23rd.

Midsommar

Aw, man. They got rid of the white bars that were in the teaser. I was kinda hoping that it would be a deliberate aesthetic choice. That’s disappointing. However, the movie certainly looks fun. It does have a heavy Wickerman vibe, which I’m hoping it steers away from because these kinds of Euro-cult horror movies are kind of a dime-a-dozen. I liked Hereditary well enough, if for reasons that hardly anyone else seems to share, so I’m definitely curious to see how he follows that up.

Midsommar will be released in theaters on July 3rd.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette

This was delayed since the release of the first trailer, so I figured I’d include this here, even though it really doesn’t do anything that different from the last one. I have a lot of faith in Richard Linklater, so I’m obviously very excited to see whatever he does, even if this doesn’t necessarily look like his usual A-game material. And Cate Blanchett is always reliable, so I’m expecting this to be at least a reasonably good time. Though, it does weirdly bother me that there’s no question mark in the title.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette will release in theaters on August 16th.

Primal

Hey, all you gotta tell me that there’s a new Genndy Tartakovsky joint coming in, and that’s all I need. I certainly appreciate and admire the work he’s done with the Hotel Transylvania series, but it will always be his TV work that shows off just how talented this guy is with his work on Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Star Wars: Clone Wars. I can’t wait to see what he does with this.

Primal’s release date has not been officially stated, but it will premiere this fall on Adult Swim.
