Without Remorse

I feel like it’s been a while since we’ve last had a big Tom Clancy adaptation. It had to have been that Jack Ryan movie from a few years back and the Amazon series, right? I mean, this definitely looks better than those. I can’t say I’m all too familiar with Clancy’s work, I haven’t ready any of his books, but I’m surprised at how this seems like a pretty straight forward revenge film. I’m not complaining, though. While I had my issues with the second Sicario film, I thought Stefano Sollima’s direction was really good, and I suppose he has a good relationship with Taylor Sheridan since he’s listed as a co-writer for this. I’m actually really on board for this, the action looks good, I dig Michael B. Jordan, and it ends on a delightfully bonkers note. Consider me intrigued.

Without Remorse hits Amazon Prime Video on April 30th.

Thunder Force

I haven’t gotten around to seeing last year’s Superintelligence, though given the word-of-mouth, I guess I don’t need to. I was already skeptical because all of Melissa McCarthy’s collaborations with her husband, Ben Falcone, just haven’t done much for me, and this is another one. I did find myself chuckling at a few spots here, which is more than I could say for previous films of theirs, and since it’s a  Netflix release, it’s not like I’m committed if I’m not liking it. I might just give this a shot, but I can’t say I’m expecting all that much.

Thunder Force will release on Netflix on April 9th.

Voyagers

This looks incredibly silly. Why is Colin Farrell giving these teens a drink that makes them horny? I have so many questions. Though, the funniest part is the end where they basically state their theme out loud, something about man in their most primal state being violent and whatever, which is an idea that is so hackneyed at this point, I can’t fathom why they would have this actor say it with a straight face. It is not a profound thought, it’s basic and derivative. That said, while I don’t consider myself a Neil Burger fan, this could still be fun in a trashy way, and it looks like it’s got some style to it. I just won’t expecting it to be particularly smart.

Voyagers will hit theaters on April 9th.

Shiva Baby

I’m sold. This looks great, and I recall hearing about how good it is during its festival run. It looks very funny, but also weirdly tense, all good markings for a good old fashioned screwball style comedy where there are layers of jokes and dynamics piled on top of one another. The trailer is very well done, and it paints a very unique sensibility that I’m very excited to see through the actual film. Not much else to say, but I’m really looking forward to this.

Shiva Baby hits select theaters and VOD platforms on April 2nd.

Funny Face

This is the latest film from Tim Sutton. His movies make for really great trailers because his style is super atmospheric, and often – in my opinion – to its detriment. I haven’t seen his first two films, but I’ve seen Dark Night and Donnybrook, and neither did much for me, mostly due to those atmospheric indulgences which I felt called too much attention to itself at the expense of character. It could be the same case here, but like I said, his movies make for some cool trailers, and this is a really cool trailer. If I didn’t know this was a Sutton flick, I’d be excited, so for the moment, I’ll just be cautiously optimistic.

Funny Face opens on VOD platforms on March 30th.

The Seventh Day

Hey, a second appearance from Guy Pierce, that’s fun. This movie, though? I’m not quite sure. Exorcist movies are a dime a dozen, but I can’t say I’ve seen one that takes the exorcist formula by way of Training Day. That’s definitely new to me. But is it fresh enough to warrant a look? I think it might be. I do love supernatural horror, and for the most part, this doesn’t look too bad. It could be another movie that’s more trashy fun than anything else, but that’s not nothing. I might give this a shot.

The Seventh Day hits select theaters and VOD on March 26th.

The Underground Railroad

We finally get a brief look at Barry Jenkins’ upcoming Amazon series, and surprising absolutely no one, it looks gorgeous. I did a little research, and it appears to be based on a book of the same name by Colson Whitehead, and it’s about two slaves who runaway utilizing a network in a literal underground railroad. I didn’t look too deep into plot details because I would like to be surprised, but the premise is a fascinating one, and it looks like it will be a really compelling and interesting show. I can’t wait to see it.

The Underground Railroad will have all episodes available on Amazon Prime Video on May 14th.
