Vox Lux
This looks pretty wild, and based on some of the reactions from its festival run, this is one to check out. Natalie Portman is pretty much always great in whatever she’s in, so I’m already sold on this. I’m kinda curious how this plays with audience, especially given we had another movie about the modern celebrity with A Star Is Born. This looks a lot more twisted, and I’m totally up for that.
Vox Lux will hit select theaters on December 7th.
Bird Box
This looks like it could be cool. I can’t help but imagine that this got made because A Quiet Place was so successful, but it still looks interesting on its own terms. It’s based on a popular book, the casting is so good, it almost seems out of place for something that seems like a pulpy horror film, but I’m very much into that. It’s written by the Arrival guy and it’s directed by Susanne Bier, so maybe it’ll be a winner. I hope it’s good.
Bird Box will stream on Netflix on December 21st.
The Prodigy
Creepy kid, possession, Taylor Schilling? Sure, you got my curiosity. I got this trailer, as well as the one for Escape Room, in front of Halloween last Thursday, and the crowd response was pretty solid for both. For this one, it looks neat, maybe not super ambitious, but I’ll check out a creepy kid movie, we don’t get enough good ones.
The Prodigy will hit theaters February 8th, 2019.
Cold Pursuit
Oh, man. I love everything about this. I know this is a remake of the Norwegian black comedy, In Order Of Disappearance, which I haven’t seen, but it’s the same director, which gives me a lot of hope that this won’t be like a watered down version of the original. I love a good Liam Neeson action movie, and to get one that will finally allow him to lean on his perfect comedic skills, that’s awesome. I’m genuinely excited for this one.
Cold Pursuit will release in theaters on February 8th, 2019.
Escape Room
And yeah, Escape Room, looking like Cabin in the Woods crossed with Cube. I dig this too. If the filmmakers play this just right, it can be a lot of fun. It’s by the guy who made The Taking of Deborah Logan and Insidious: The Last Key, so I can at least expect something decent. Hopefully, it takes advantage of its cool premise.
Escape Room will release in theaters on January 4th, 2019.
Monster Party
Two opposing groups of people stuck in an enclosed space killing each other to survive. A tale as old as time. It looks fine, I suppose. Despite showing a lot, I feel like there is some angle I’m missing. I hope it’s a bit more substantial than it seems because if I just want a pure bloodbath, I can always look elsewhere for better examples. This played at some festivals, but given that I haven’t heard much about this, I can’t say it’s a good sign. I hope it surprises me, though.
Monster Party will release in select theaters, and VOD platforms on November 2nd.
Possum
Guys…that’s a spider, not a possum. I just wanna say first that I in no way intended for today’s list to consist of so many horror movies, it just turned out that way. So, as far as this one goes, it’s the most promising out of all of these. It’s eerie and it got under my skin, and I’ve really grown to like Sean Harris as an actor. That voice is something else. The writer/director behind this has a history in comedy, which is certainly interesting. I’m very curious about this one.
Possum will hit select cinemas and VOD platforms on October 26th.
