The Whale

Definitely more of a teaser than a trailer, as the video is labeled. Like most people, I am absolutely rooting for Brendan Fraser with his recent comeback. I do, however, have some concerns about how the film handles the character and his obesity, how it’s framed, and how it could come across. Hollywood is no stranger to fatphobia, so that is one thing that I’m curious about. Especially with someone as provocative as Darren Aronofsky at the helm. I’ll remain cautiously optimistic.

The Whale hits theaters on December 9th.

Chevalier

I’ve only read a bit about Chevalier de Saint-Georges, but from what I recall, he certainly led an interesting life. It’s one that definitely suits the big screen, and I hope this does it justice. The director, Stephen Williams, has done a couple films way back in his early days, but has largely done TV work since. These kind of costume dramas are typically not my bag unless they’re doing something really interesting, either formally or storywise, and the material they’re working with here should allow for that. Hope it’s good!

Chevalier is set to open in theaters on April 7th, 2023.

The Almond And The Seahorse

Rebel Wilson and Charlotte Gainsbourg is a pairing I never thought I would see. This is definitely the most dramatic role I’ve seen Wilson in, so I’ll be curious to see how she pulls it off, considering how heavy the subject matter is. The trailer definitely makes it look solid enough, but it’s hard to tell with these kinds of movies that are centered around some kind of disability or disease or anything like that. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

The Almond And The Seahorse opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on December 16th.

2nd Chance

Interesting! Richard Davis is quite the character, so I’m curious to see a documentary that might provide some further insight into that guy. This also feels like a bit of a departure for Ramin Bahrani, not so much in terms of documentary filmmaking, but more in the kind of stories that are usually in his wheelhouse. This isn’t what I would’ve expected after making The White Tiger, but I imagine there must’ve been something special to attract him to the story in the first place.

2nd Chance will be released in select theaters on December 2nd.

Bantú Mama

Array tends to be pretty good with the films they decide to pick up and release, and this doesn’t look like it would be much of an exception. It looks intense, well made, and well performed. Not a ton else to dig into, but it does look solid, gonna keep an eye out for this one.

Bantú Mama hits Netflix on November 17th.

John Wick: Chapter 4

So excited for this one, obviously. I believe I talked about the teaser when that dropped a while back, but this trailer is definitely satisfying and intriguing. It almost seemed to hold back on giving away a lot of the action beats, opting more for atmosphere and story elements, which all look quite strong. Not much more to add that hasn’t already been said already, it looks fantastic!

John Wick: Chapter 4 hits theaters on March 24th, 2023.
