The Vigil

I’ll actually be seeing this within the next couple days, so I’ll be finding out soon enough whether this is any good. The trailer is really solid. I already like supernatural horror anyway, and I find it even more fascinating when that style of horror is rooted in religions other that Christianity. I think I may have only seen one or two other horror movies like this that pull from Judaism. I’m really intrigued by this, especially considering it’s from someone making his directorial debut.

The Vigil opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on February 26th.

Happily

Speaking of directorial debuts, this comes from BenDavid Grabinski, who has previously done a little film and TV writing. I happen to follow him on Twitter, so I was somewhat aware of this prior to the trailer hitting the web. That said, I don’t have any idea what is going on here, but I do like what I see. It seems to blend several genres and tones, and it’s got a cast of people who I’ve seen do terrific work before. I don’t know what to expect, and that’s good for me. I can’t wait to see it.

Happily will hit select theaters and VOD platforms on March 19th.

Yes Day

I don’t know why, but it feels so weird to see Edgar Ramírez totally clean shaven. I’m just so used to him seeing with some facial hair, at least a stubble. I don’t have much to say about this, honestly. It seems like typical family fare, and not the kind I usually like to see. I highly doubt I’ll end up seeing this, but hey, if this looks like your cup of tea, I hope you enjoy it.

Yes Day will be released on Netflix on March 12th.

Sentinelle

I don’t think I’ve seen Olga Kurylenko in a non-English language film before, but she looks pretty good here. It’s cool to see her take up an action heavy lead role like this. Sure, the setup is basic, but it’s functional, and it’s directed by Julien Leclercq, who made this Jean-Claude Van Damme actioner a few years back called The Bouncer (also went by Lukas outside the U.S., I believe), and that was a film I really enjoyed. So, this is one I’ll keep my eye out for.

Sentinelle hits Netflix on March 5th.

Jumbo

I remember this being talked about quite a bit at last year’s Sundance. I don’t recall what the critical consensus was, but I did know that it made a big impression. I mean, I can’t imagine making a movie about a girl falling in love with a theme park ride, and not making an impression on an audience. I’m sure that’s a simplified take on the film, but I’m just going by reputation. It does seem like the film is doing something interesting with that idea. I also loved Noémie Merlant in Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, so any chance to see more of her is good for me.

Jumbo opens in select virtual cinemas on February 19th before being available on DVD and VOD platforms on March 16th.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

Man, they sure are going all out with these titles. WandaVision, The Falcoln And The Winter Soldier, Loki, Ms. Marvel. I’m not asking for anything fancy, but whatever happened to stuff like “The Adventures Of such and such” or “Tales From so and so?” Anyway, I don’t know what the consensus on this trailer is, but I will say that I kinda dig it. It somehow captures the 90s action movie vibe better than Captain Marvel did, and I like me a 90s action movie vibe, especially with the buddy dynamic. It speaks my language. I’ve been enjoying WandaVision, and this looks like another fun action show. While I do have real issues with the business side of it, and I may snark on the properties and their fandom on occasion, I do generally enjoy the stuff Marvel Studios puts out. This looks like it will be a good time, and I’m not really asking nor expecting for it to be anything more.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ March 19th.
