The Tax Collector

Yeah, sure. I tend to like David Ayer well enough when he’s in his wheelhouse of grungy crime movies, less so when there’s superheroics and fantasy elements involved. He’s got a distinct vibe, and I dig it for the most part. It doesn’t look like it will reach the sleazy heights of something like Sabotage, but I’m definitely curious. And Shia LaBeouf is always a reliable performer, so that’s a plus.

The Tax Collector is scheduled to hit select theaters and VOD platforms on August 7th.

Respect

Doesn’t show much, but it honestly looks like a fairly generic biopic. Aretha Franklin has certainly led an interesting life, and I hope the film dramatizes that in an interesting way. It’s also written and directed by Black women, Tracey Scott Wilson and Liesl Tommy, respectively, so it’s great they’ve been given the opportunity to tell this story, and maybe tell it in a way that will ring more true than if someone else were to helm it.

Respect will hit theaters on December 25th.

Made In Italy

This is so weird to me because it’s reminding me of every painfully quirky American indie dramedy, except it’s set in Europe, starring mostly well respected British actors and Liam Neeson. Looks fine, I guess. The only interesting thing to note about it is that it’s written and directed by actor, James D’Arcy, making his debut behind the camera. It doesn’t look bad, but I can’t say I’m particularly excited for it.

Made In Italy will open in select theaters and VOD platforms on August 7th.

Fatal Affair

Man, just a few years ago, this would’ve been released by Screen Gems, and I would’ve been seeing it in a weirdly packed theater where everyone is constantly yelling at the screen, and it would have been amazing. I don’t know if that experience will carry over into Netflix viewing, but it wouldn’t hurt to see. This looks like fun trash, and I feel like it’s been a while since we’ve had something that’s good, trashy, and fun.

Fatal Affair will hit Netflix on July 16th.

Amulet

Couldn’t quite get a grasp at what exactly the hook was supposed to be, but it’s a loud trailer, that’s for sure. This is the second trailer today that marks the directorial debut from someone who is an actor, this time it’s Romola Garai. Despite the jumbled nature of the trailer, I am intrigued. I hope it turns out well, it’s been a fairly decent year for horror, and I hope we keep getting some good ones.

Amulet will open in select theaters and VOD platforms on July 24th.
