The Owners

I’m getting some Don’t Breathe vibes from this. Though, I don’t know if the graphic novel this is based on came before that film or not. It seems like it could be fun enough. I’m hoping there is more to the situation than just the old couple being serial killers or something. It’s nice to see Maisie Williams pop up in something. She was great in Game Of Thrones, and I’m glad to see her still get more and more work in movies, even if that New Mutants is still not coming anytime soon. As far as this goes, it’s not getting me super excited, but I’ll probably check it out.

The Owners will hit select theaters and VOD platforms on September 4th.

All Together Now

This looks cute. This is directed by Brett Haley, who has made a whole career out of these gentle, optimistic, and understated dramas, and I’ve really enjoyed them all. So, anything that he’s doing has my attention. Plus, it’ll be interesting to see Auliʻi Cravalho take the lead in something like this after making it big doing the voice of Moana. It definitely looks like she’s got a lot to offer, so I’m hoping this delivers.

All Together Now will hit Netflix on August 28th.

The Devil All The Time

Well, this has definitely jumped up my list of anticipated movies for the rest of the year. I remember hearing about this when casting was happening, but I had no clue what it was actually about. I’m all in for whatever sleazy, gnarly stuff this seems to have in store – though, I do hope they take the time to fix up that wonky effect of the CG spiders in that one shot, it stood out quite a bit. Other than that, this looks like my jam. I haven’t seen all of Antonio Campos’ films, but I did really like his last film, Christine. The dude is certainly unflinching, and it looks like that sensibility will serve this material well.

The Devil All The Time will be released on Netflix on September 16th.

The 24th

This does look tense, and I’m glad it’s putting a spotlight on a lesser known event in Black history, the incident often referred to as the 1917 Houston riot or the Camp Logan mutiny. However, considering this is from Kevin Willmott, it does looks surprisingly bland and less cinematically idiosyncratic, especially compared to his earlier work and his recent collaborations with Spike Lee like BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods. Still, it looks solid, and as a history buff, it wil be interesting to see how they put this event on screen.

The 24th will open in select virtual theaters and VOD platforms on August 21st.

Judas And The Black Messiah

Boy, does this look incredible. I’m not aware of who Shaka King is, he only made one film in 2013 and some shorts and TV work since, but I hope he does a good job with this because it could be very easy to water down the story and the philosophy of Fred Hampton, especially since this is a studio film. That aside, I am loving the cast. Weirdly enough, I do think Daniel Kaluuya is too old for the role, he’s literally a decade older than Hampton was at this point in his life, which is 21 years old by the way, but still, he looks great. Plus, you got Ashton Sanders, Lakeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons, and a ton of others. We still got a while to wait for this to be released, but it’s one I’m definitely looking forward to come next year. Hopefully, we all make it till then.

Judas And The Black Messiah will hit theaters on a currently unspecified date in 2021.
