The Other Side Of The Wind

A great trailer for the final film by one of the all time great filmmakers that is finally going to see the light of day. Even if the movie itself isn’t as good as people might hope, the fact that we still get to experience a never-before-seen Orson Welles movie one last time is just awesome, plus the fact that it seems to be a gonzo meta exercise about the filmmaking process is weirdly appropriate. I can’t wait to see this, and I’m hoping it plays in a theater near me.

The Other Side Of The Wind will be released on Netflix and select theaters November 2nd.

Bayou Caviar

Looks like Cuba Gooding Jr. is taking his first step behind the camera, serving as not just the star, but also as co-writer and director. The results look…well, not that great, if I’m being honest. However, with the setup, and with the right amount of energy, this could be a fun, trashy thriller. Unless they expect us to take all those accents seriously, then we might have a problem. I hope it’s at least entertaining since there is a hint of a compelling story here.

Bayou Caviar will be released in select theaters and VOD platforms on October 5th.

The Front Runner

A new Reitman picture, and right after his best movie in a long while, Tully, this is interesting indeed. It almost looks like him going back to his satirical roots with Thank You For Smoking, which is fine by me, since I love that film. This looks like it could be fun and interesting, and of course, very relevant, but I’m really just excited to see this cast. Obviously, Hugh Jackman, Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons are all great, but you also have folks like Bill Burr and Mike Judge, which is pretty awesome. It could possibly end up being middlebrow fluff, but I’m rooting for Reitman to continue his upswing.

The Front Runner will hit theaters on November 7th.

Ben Is Back

Man, Lucas Hedges is everywhere. Is this a good time to mention I’m not entirely sure why. I think he’s a fine actor, but we seem to be treating him like the new “it” guy, and I don’t see what it is about him that has people going nuts. But whatever, this is the new film from Peter Hedges (Lucas’ dad, which starts to explain things), and it’s a very short teaser, and as a teaser, it’s solid. It’s not sending a totally clear message, so I don’t know if this is a heartwarming drama or some kind of thriller, it could go either way, and that’s a fun way to do a teaser.

Ben Is Back will be released in select cinemas December 7th.

A Private War

This is directed by Matthew Heineman, the documentary filmmaker behind projects like Cartel Land and City of Ghosts. He’s a big talent, and this is his first foray into dramatized narrative filmmaking, and since the subject matter – the journalist and war correspondent Marie Colvin – is totally up his alley, this looks really well done. Rosamund Pike has always been somewhat hit-and-miss, but she seems to nail Colvin’s voice and general mannerisms, so we might have something interesting here. I’m definitely curious about this.

A Private War will be released in theaters November 2nd.

Bad Times At The El Royale

I talked about the teaser prior, and loved it. I’ve mentioned before that I limit my coverage to one teaser and one trailer, but this new trailer for Bad Times At The El Royale could’ve easily just been the teaser since it basically gives us the information we already knew. A bunch of strangers go to a hotel, they all have a secret, chaos ensues. I don’t mean that in a negative way, just so I’m clear, this trailer rocks, and I’m eagerly anticipating this. But it’s just a recut of the first teaser.

Bad Times At The El Royale will hit theaters October 12th.

True Detective: Season 3

I should admit up front, I kind of enjoyed Season 2 of True Detective, for the most part. I don’t think it fully found a good rhythm for itself, but I liked the actors, and it had a vibe that was distinctive from the first one, and it was something I found myself very engaged it. It’s no Season 1, but who cares? That said, I wasn’t crazy about the prospect of a Season 3 until they announced folks like Mahershala Ali and Carmen Ejogo joining the cast and Jeremy Saulnier directing. Although, he later left, only directing the first three episodes, but still. It’s enough to get me interested, and this teaser is great. I look forward to seeing what they got cooking up.

Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on HBO sometime in January 2019.
