The Old Guard
That has to be the most dramatic deleting of a selfie I’ve ever seen in a movie, and also maybe the first. I like Gina Prince-Bythewood, I’ve really enjoyed her films, and it’s surprising to see her tackle something that leans so heavily on genre, and one that seems as silly as this. I’m not complaining, though. This looks fun, and the cast looks great, the action looks solid. I haven’t read the comic this is based on, but it’s got a nice hook. I’m definitely curious about this one.
The Old Guard drops on Netflix on July 10th.
Da 5 Bloods
This trailer feels a bit unnecessarily longwinded, but that’s OK because it’s a new Spike Lee joint, which means I am very, very excited. This has been one of my most anticipated films of the year, and given that it’s a Netflix release, it’s one of the few that can still be delivered this year. The cast looks spectacular, but I’m especially looking forward to the work from the older members of this ensemble. It’s not often we get to see older actors be given meaty material these days, especially older people of color, so I am very much looking forward to this.
Da 5 Bloods hits Netflix on June 12th.
Tenet
Yes, it’s a new Christopher Nolan movie, of course I’m excited to see it. This trailer changes nothing, it still looks really cool and exciting. It’s great to see a filmmaker get a big budget for their weird, non-IP related ideas, and I wish that freedom wasn’t just limited to a small handful of filmmakers. I do, however, have my doubts that the film will end up coming out on its July release date. Considering they want to do it if at least 80% of theaters are open, I don’t think we’ll be at that point by July.
I kind of doubt it will happen, but Tenet is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 17th.
Gundala
Indonesia is entering the superhero game, and this looks like one hell of a way to make an entrance. This looks awesome. Apparently, this is based on an actual comic that I haven’t heard of, and this film is also meant to be the start of a whole cinematic universe of other Indonesian superheroes. Who knows how that will turn out, but if the trailer is of any indication, this is looking to be wildly entertaining.
Gundala will be available on home video and VOD platforms on July 28th.
The Last Days Of American Crime
This premise seems incredibly contrived to me, but maybe that’s just one of those things that’s hard to get across in the trailer. It looks fine enough, I guess. However, when I looked in the description and read that Olivier Megaton is directing this, I kinda lost interest. He directed the Taken sequels, and his action sequences have been known to be heavily edited to the point of being incomprehensible. Who knows, maybe this will be decent, but the trailer itself doesn’t really garner much interest to me.
