The New Mutants

I’ll believe when I’m in the theater to see it. This actually looks pretty cool, and I thought so even when I saw the first trailer back – what feels like – two to three years ago. I like the idea of doing a superhero horror film, and the setup here is intriguing, even if kinda lose interest when we get to the CG heavy stuff at the end. Still, this is a collection of actors I like, and it can be a neat little exercise that will break the mold of a typical superhero film. It’ll probably be more horror oriented than whatever Marvel Studios had planned for the Doctor Strange sequel.

The New Mutants will (hopefully) hit theaters on April 3rd.

First Cow

I haven’t seen everything from writer/director, Kelly Reichardt, but what I have seen I enjoyed quite a bit. I especially loved Certain Women from 2016. The quiet humanism of that film is definitely all over the trailer for this film, and it just looks lovely to me. Not a whole lot else to talk about, but I am definitely looking forward to this. I hope it’s full of corny cow reaction shots.

First Cow opens in theaters on March 6th.

Locke & Key

I heard this has been highly anticipated, but I haven’t read the Joe Hill comic book series that this is based on. But I can certainly see the appeal. It has a bit of an Amblin vibe, but with a more harder edge. Not unlike what Eli Roth did with A House With A Clock In Its Walls not too long ago, but taking things even a step further it seems. It sure does look promising, though I doubt I myself will find the time to get into it, unless the word-of-mouth is really, really good. Still, I hope fans of the series are satisfied with this.

Locke & Key will launch its season on February 7th.

Birds Of Prey

I don’t know if this was a project that needed to be R-rated and geared towards adults, but whatever, it looks fun. I like its irreverence, the cast looks game, I’m happy to see McGregor actually put on the mask, the action looks solid. These trailers have been a ton of fun, and I hope the film delivers on what they’re promising. Robbie is too good in this role to be stuck in the legacy of something like Suicide Squad.

Birds Of Prey hits theaters on February 7th.

Tyler Perry’s A Fall From Grace

https://youtu.be/KxLb3aLb5j4

There’s a moment early in this trailer where a character compliments a lady by talking about how she lights up the room, and the scene itself is the most poorly lit moment in the whole trailer. That’s Tyler Perry for ya. I can admire the man for what he’s accomplished, especially with the big studio lot he built, the media empire he put together from the ground up, as well as providing work for wonderful actors who aren’t given much opportunities elsewhere…but man, I wish he could grow and evolve as an artist. Granted, if this is anything like Acrimony, it might prove to be amusing, but I can’t say I’m expecting much else from this.

Tyler Perry’s A Fall From Grace will be released on Netflix on January 17th.

Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made

So, Disney+ movies are getting Sundance premieres now? Lovely time for independent cinema, I guess. I do find it kind of hilarious that this is Tom McCarthy’s big follow up after his Oscar winning turn with Spotlight. I guess it looks harmless enough. I haven’t even heard of the book that this is based on, but it looks like total fluff. But hey, I’m totally open to the possibility of being pleasantly surprised.

Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made hits Disney+ on February 7th.
