The Killer

Wow, I am getting strong Fincher from the 90s vibes from this trailer. I did not expect this. I don’t know about the source material, but I do know Andrew Kevin Walker wrote the script, and that has me very, very excited. I admired Mank, but I didn’t love it. This looks way more my speed, and it seems like it might be Fincher’s first ever full on action movie, which is awesome. And that title design, with the “i” falling down…chef’s kiss.

The Killer opens in select theaters on October 27th before streaming on Netflix starting November 10th.

Foe

This is very intriguing. I’ve only seen one film from Garth Davis, the Dev Patel vehicle Lion, and I loved that film. He definitely has vibe, if not a full stylistic through line, between all three movies he’s made. This is also the first one he’ll have a writing credit on, though it is based on a book. In doing a bit of research, the book is written by the same author who wrote the source material that I’m Thinking Of Ending Things was based on. If this is anything on that level, I’m really curious to see what this is like. I don’t know what to expect, but I love seeing adult oriented genre-savvy projects like this, and with a cast like this, I hope it delivers.

Foe hits theaters on October 6th.

Flora And Son

You can smell a John Carney flick from a mile away, can’t you? I’m not complaining, mind you. The films of his that I’ve seen, are all really good, very charming, and I love the lowkey vibe that they all have, very much focused on character. And his passion for music, and the connections and emotions that surround music, is really compelling to watch manifest in these stories he tells. Also, I’m just happy to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a movie again. I can’t wait to see this.

Flora And Son opens in select theaters on September 22nd before streaming exclusively on Apple TV+ on September 29th.

Cat Person

OK, I’m a dum-dum, I never read the article this is based on, though I recall the time when it went viral. I was under the assumption that it was a real thing from the author’s experience – whatever it was, I didn’t think it was a work of fiction. And having read the synopsis on Wikipedia (yes, I know, I know, don’t judge me), I don’t really see how anyone thought there was a movie in this story. A short film, sure, but a feature? It does look like they’re adding quite a bit to stretch it all out. I probably wouldn’t normally be interested, except for two things. One, I love Geraldine Viswanathan, she’s a super talented actress, and I’m always gonna support my fellow South Asian performers. And two, this is directed by Susanna Fogel, who did the surprisingly really good comedy, The Spy Who Dumped Me. So, that alone has me interested, but I’ll keep expectations in check. Who knows, though, maybe I should read the article, and I’ll have a better understanding of why this might be a story worth telling in this format.

Cat Person opens in select theaters on October 6th.

Society Of The Snow

So, I’m not the biggest fan of director J.A. Bayona, though The Orphanage is a certified banger. However, I feel like this is something that might work in his wheelhouse. Like, what if The Impossible, but without the kinda iffy racial politics, yeah, that sounds pretty good to me actually. He’s a solid craftsman, I’ll give him that. It’s also a harrowing story to say the least, and worthy of a modern adaptation. I haven’t seen Frank Marshall’s Alive in a very long time, so I have no idea how it holds up. I’ll remain cautiously optimistic about this.

Society Of The Snow will be released by Netflix on a currently unspecified date in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The Origin Of Evil

OK, this trailer definitely has my attention. While I do think some of the themes here regarding class, wealth, and patriarchy are kind of overdone. It seems to have a cool atmosphere to it. It does make me wonder what exactly is going on here, it’s a very well constructed trailer, very mysterious, very odd, sometimes amusing. I don’t know much about the people involved in this, but I am curious.

The Origin Of Evil opens in select theaters on September 22nd.
