The Invisible Man

I think Leigh Whannell is a huge talent, and I was very impressed with his directorial work so far, especially with Upgrade. So, naturally, I’m very excited to see him do something like this. Although, like with that Upgrade trailer, they sure do give a lot of cool stuff away here. Despite that, this looks pretty great. This is a great way to approach these Universal Monsters as opposed to those action blockbusters they were trying to do. Really looking forward to this.

The Invisible Man opens in theaters on February 28th, 2020.

Soul

With this and Onward, I’m so happy to see Pixar going back to original ideas. This one is from Pete Docter, who brought us Monsters Inc, Up, and Inside Out, but the thing about it that has me the most curious is the fact that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are doing the score, which is absolutely wild. Plus, I just really dig the fact that this movie is apparently about a guy who just died, so…you know, fun for the whole family.

Soul will be released in theaters on June 19th, 2020.

Color Out Of Space

This looks totally rad. I’ve been anticipating this one since it was announced. The idea of Richard Stanley coming back as a director, tackling Lovecraft, and having Cage as the star, it just seems like it was made to catch my interest. The word-of-mouth from its festival run has been really good, so I’m expecting good things from this. Can’t wait.

Color Out Of Space hits theaters on January 24th, 2020.

Wendy

Holy moly, that looks interesting. I didn’t love Beasts Of The Southern Wild, but I did admire it quite a bit, and I’m surprised it’s taken this long for Benh Zeitlin to come out with another film, and it’s especially surprising that this is what he chose for his next project. However, I do have a weird fascination with the Peter Pan story, so I’m very curious to see what he’s doing here. One thing’s for sure, the guy definitely has a style you can recognize from a mile away.

Wendy opens in theaters on February 28th, 2020.

Hala

https://youtu.be/4aS-qGHH6E0

I heard some great things about this from its Sundance premiere, so I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while. Plus, I think Geraldine Viswanathan is an extremely gifted performer even just from the few things of hers that I’ve seen like Blockers being the biggest example. This just seems like a wonderful little drama about the kind of person that you don’t usually see in most movies, and that is enough for me to be intrigued.

Hala will open in select theaters on November 22nd before hitting Apple TV+ on December 6th.

The Two Popes

I can’t say the subject matter is something that is up my alley, but as a means of seeing two perfectly cast actors bounce off each other for a couple hours, it looks pretty damn good. It seems like they’ll take a simple setup, and maybe explore some deeper things with these two characters, and if done well, that can be really compelling. I hope it’s good.

The Two Popes will open in select theaters before being released on Netflix on December 20th.

The Banker

This looks like a fairly by-the-numbers awards season crowd pleaser, but as one of those, it doesn’t look bad. I don’t know much about this story, but it looks like an interesting one. I like the cast assembled here. Definitely looks like Apple TV+ is really trying to establish some legitimacy with the types of projects they’re putting out. I’m curious to see how it turns out for them.

The Banker will be released in theaters on December 6th.

The Photograph

Watching this trailer reminds that we just don’t get that many straightforward romantic dramas anymore. Most of them are rom-coms that put extra emphasis on the comedy than they do the romance. This weirdly feels like a breath of fresh air. I’ll watch anything with Lakeith Stanfield, but everyone here has done some good stuff that I’ve seen here and there. I wouldn’t say this is something I’m super excited for, but it looks good, and I’ll definitely be there to see it when it’s out.

The Photograph will be released in theaters on February 14th, 2020.
