The Inspection

This looks surprisingly middlebrow as far as A24 dramas go. I feel like this is something a major studio would have released during awards season, not the smaller indie distributor. Either way, it does look good, and I’m always intrigued when someone from the documentary space breaks into narrative features. It’s apparently based on a true story, but I can’t seem to find any immediate info on the events it’s adapting. I’m definitely curious about this one.

The Inspection opens in select theaters starting November 18th.

Lou

Allison Janney as an action lead? Hell yes, count me in, say no more, that’s all I need. But since I should say a little more, I guess one thing that I found especially interesting is that this is directed by Anna Foerster, who has been a regular collaborator with Roland Emmerich, having done second unit directing or VFX cinematography for a lot of his films. Her first feature was the last Underworld movie, and it was silly fun. This is definitely a different vibe, but I like what I see. Odd that this isn’t advertising that this is from J.J. Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, that’s a fairly recognizable name. Oh well, still looks cool to me, can’t wait.

Lou hits Netflix on September 23rd.

Mona Lisa And The Blood Moon

This looks like a blast. I’ve been quite fond of Ana Lily Amirpour’s work, she knows how to set such a unique and tonally unpredictable vibe. I’m liking the setup here, it’s like if you took one of those 80s movies about a lost alien or someone with weird powers or whatever, but instead of a suburb, it’s taking place in the seedy parts of New Orleans with a major Harmony Korine filter. Looks exactly like my cup of tea, really excited for this one.

Mona Lisa And The Blood Moon will be released in select theaters and VOD platforms on September 30th.

Something In The Dirt

Speaking of a filmmaker who knows how to set a unique vibe – or filmmakers, I should say – this is the latest from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. This is a teaser, so obviously not a lot to go on, just some weird and freaky imagery. I have heard this being described as a “dark comedy,” but this trailer is not giving off any of those vibes. Either way, this is one that is easily among my most anticipated films of the year. I love what these guys do, and while I don’t think their last film clicked 100%, they’re still doing bold, risky, and original stuff, and I will always support that.

Something In The Dirt opens in theaters on November 4th.

The Book Of Delights

I believe this is a film from Brazil, the director is Marcela Lordy, who I am not terribly familiar with, but this looks interesting, and it’s got what seems like a playful vibe even with the overt symbolic and dreamy imagery. Film Movement tends to put their name behind really strong work, so I don’t doubt that this will be a compelling watch. I’ll keep my eye out for this.

The Book Of Delights will hit VOD platforms on September 2nd.

Call Jane

Boy, the timing on this is certainly eerie. We had an abortion drama not too long ago with Happening, and this definitely feels more like the mainstream/crowd-pleasing version of that kind of story, which makes me a touch less interested in this, though there are definitely a lot of talented folks involved. I am a bit concerned that Wunmi Mosaku’s character is just going to be there to make remarks that serve to call out the lack of internationality in a lot of feminist movements of that era in a very lamp-shade-y way, and not much else beyond that. She seems to be the only POC that I noticed here, and that’s usually the purpose the lone POC character usually serves in a film like this. Hope I’m wrong. But aside from that, it looks pretty descent.

Call Jane will be released in theaters on October 28nd.
