The Grudge

I feel like I would normally not be all that interested in a horror movie like this, one that is a reboot of a J-horror property that is also being released in January, but it does have a few things going for it. One, Sam Raimi tends to be a really good producer, just look at Crawl earlier this year. Two, the cast is interesting, especially with John Cho and Andrea Riseborough. Three, it’s directed by Nicolas Pesce, who is by no means a mainstream filmmaker if you look at The Eyes Of My Mother and Piercing. If he has a new take on this, I am curious to see what someone like him has in store.

The Grudge hits theaters on January 3rd, 2020.

Sorry We Missed You

I really like Ken Loach as a filmmaker, and I find his working class message movies to be incredibly thoughtful and engaging. His last one, I, Daniel Blake, was wonderful, and I’m not expecting anything less from this one. The word from its festival run seems to be good, so I’m definitely excited to see what he’s going to bring with this.

Sorry We Missed You opens in theaters on a currently unspecified date in March of 2020.

The Mandalorian

Yeah, it looks cool. Clearly a lot of money was thrown into this. If I’m being honest, the subject matter explored here doesn’t really interest me at all, but the cast they assembled here is so bonkers that I have to see what folks like Bill Burr, Gina Carano, Werner Herzog, Carl Weathers, and so many others are going to do here.

The Mandalorian will begin streaming on Disney+ on November 12th.

Little Joe

This looks weird. I like it. I haven’t seen anything else from filmmaker, Jessica Hausner, but this is really intriguing to me. I have no idea what to expect, and given what the trailer reveals, it could go in any number of ways. This is one I will try to keep an eye out for.

Little Joe will be released in select theaters on December 6th.

Midnight Family

This looks amazing. I’m surprised I haven’t heard much about this. The story is something I haven’t quite seen before. The idea of private and public ambulances racing against each other to get to whoever called for help is both darkly amusing and horrifying. The trailer certainly rides that tonal tightrope walk really well. I really want to see this, I have a feeling there could be something really special about it.

Midnight Family opens in select theaters on December 6th.

Line Of Duty

As far as these kind of b-cop movies go, this actually doesn’t look half bad. It certainly looks like they made a good use with their budget, some of the car stunts and action beats look cool and exciting. There’s a bunch of actors here that I like, and while I highly doubt this is going to bring anything new to the genre, it looks like a reasonably good time. Hell, I remember when movies like this would flood theaters. Now, we’re lucky we even got something like Black and Blue (a pretty solid movie) available in a wide release.

Line Of Duty will be released in select theaters and VOD platforms on November 15th.

Code 8

I haven’t seen the short film this is based on, but even if I didn’t read about that in the description, I would have had a feeling this was based on something like a short. It just has that vibe, and I don’t mean that in a good or bad way. Though, the trailer doesn’t give much beyond the general idea of cops-and-robbers-but-with-superpowers theme going on here. Shorts being made into films don’t always work out because a cool premise alone does not make a story, but I like the premise, and I hope they figure out a good story to take advantage of it.

Code 8 hits select theaters and VOD platforms on December 13th.
