The Fall Guy

This looks like a blast. I know some folks are more critical of David Leitch, but I’ve enjoyed his output, and I think he brings a light touch to the action genre that works in tandem with the playfulness that defined the work he did in the first John Wick with Chad Stahelski. Plus, Drew Pierce is writing this, so I am pretty sure this is going to rock so hard. This looks so much like my jam, I can’t wait.

The Fall Guy hits theaters March 1st, 2024.

Lift

It’s been a while since we got one of these Red Notice types. I do think F. Gary Gray is a good director, but this material looks very forgettable. The cast feels so randomly assembled, as if picked out of a hat. Also, I feel like this trailer gave away like a solid 90% of the movie, which I don’t see too often from Netflix. So, I don’t know what the deal is with that. Who knows, maybe it’ll be a fun time, but I have my doubts.

Lift premieres exclusively on Netflix on January 12th, 2024.

The Family Plan

Looks fine, I suppose. Basically, what if A History Of Violence, but in a way for the whole family can enjoy. While it doesn’t give away as much as the Lift trailer, I do feel like I could tell you every plot beat that happens here. Being predictable isn’t the end of the world by any means, but part of the fun is definitely missing. And I worry the film won’t be interesting enough to make me look past all the tropes they’re using if they aren’t going to bring something fresh to the table. Maybe it might be fun, we’ll just have to wait and see.

The Family Plan will be streaming exclusively on Apple TV+ on December 15th.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes

Fascinating. I wasn’t necessarily the biggest fan of the recent Apes trilogy, not because I thought they were bad, but they just didn’t resonate with me as much as they did with others. However, I feel like the timeline is at a point to where the status quo is genuinely interesting and it’s not the same human-ape conflict again, so I think I might actually be excited to see where this one takes us. I do think Wes Ball is a very good director, so I’m glad to see him get the chance to do something like this. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes is set to hit theaters on May 24th, 2024.

The Sweet East

That’s definitely something. I haven’t seen any movie directed by Sean Price Williams, but I have seen films he’s shot for, and the guy’s got the goods. It certainly looks unhinged and strange, and hopefully it adds up to something interesting or meaningful, or at the very least, good fun. I see lots of movies go for this kind of vibe that just end up being kind of vapid, and I think the folks behind this are certainly capable of better.

The Sweet East opens in select theaters on December 1st.

Echo

This will be the first TV-MA rated Disney+ show, which shouldn’t be too much of a problem because I highly doubt this will be a show that kids will want to watch. Not to say it looks bad. I think this trailer is actually very well constructed. And I’m always happy to see more of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin. I honestly don’t even remember much of this Echo character, or which of the Marvel shows she first came up in, but I am intrigued by what I see here. I have not been caught up with the last couple shows, but I might tune in to this. We’ll see what the word-of-mouth is.

Echo will premiere exclusively on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10th.
