The Creator
I’ll always be sold on big budget original sci-fi. Admittedly, I was a bit concerned in the opening minute because it seemed like it was yet another humans vs artificial intelligence movie, and it’s a conceit that I’m pretty tired of. But as it went along, it does look like there’s more to it than that. Plus, I’m curious to see a new film from Gareth Edwards, even though I only like one of his movies (Godzilla), I like his aesthetic, and general approach to filmmaking. So, this is one I’m going to very much be looking forward to.
The Creator hits theaters on September 29th.
Brooklyn 45
I’ve quite enjoyed both films from Ted Geoghegan, he has an interesting voice in the current landscape of genre cinema. And they are all so distinct from one another, this included. This has a very strong EC Horror comic vibe to it, the color is so rich and vibrant, and some of the effects look like something you’d see from one of those comics, and they manage to strike the balance between being hokey and compelling to watch. It’s also nice to see a genre film that primarily centers an older ensemble made up of character actors. It’s nice to see these folks get a chance to shine with some weird material. Can’t wait.
Brooklyn 45 will debut on Shudder June 9th.
Five Nights At Freddy’s
I feel like this is at least a decade too late, but alright, it’s here now. I never played the game, but I am aware of how it works. Seems intriguing enough as a game, but as a film, there’s definitely gonna be some narrative stretching required. I was intrigued by the prospect of Chris Columbus directing this, but he apparently left at some point, and instead we have Emma Tammi, who directed a pretty solid horror film called The Wind several years back. No expectations for this, I just hope it’s not boring.
Five Nights At Freddy’s opens in theaters on October 27th.
Earth Mama
Yeah, this looks really interesting. A directorial debut from a former Olympic athlete, that’s a new one. Not much to say since a lot of the folks involved are making their debut with this film, but the trailer is very well assembled, I like the look of the film. It certainly gives off the vibe of providing an emotionally rich experience. I’ll be checking it out for sure.
Earth Mama opens in select theaters on July 7th.
Prisoner’s Daughter
I like Catherine Hardwicke’s work in general, though she is far from infallible. I have not seen Mafia Mama from earlier this year, but the word has not been good. And to be honest, this trailer isn’t doing much for me. It feels like a standard heavy handed weepie. Brian Cox and Kate Beckinsale do look pretty good here, but the story happening around them feels like a collection from all kinds of poor, melodramatic tearjerkers that hardly ever earn the emotions they’re trying to bring out of an audience. But I would like to be wrong.
Prisoner’s Daughter will be released in select theaters on June 30th.
Passages
Well, this trailer tells me very little. I’m not sure what the point is of making teasers for these smaller releases, but whatever. The only film I’ve seen from Ira Sachs is Love Is Strange, which I liked quite a bit from what I remember. I do like all the actors involved here. And it looks like it will be a very romantically and sexually charged picture, which will certainly be interesting to watch. I’d probably be more excited if I got a hint as to what the basic setup is, but I’m still curious enough to check it out.
