Cats
Boy, I cannot wait to see this. I have nothing else to say that I haven’t already said with the teaser. I have no idea what I’m looking at, but this looks wild and weird, and I have no clue what the people behind this were thinking about some of these choices. I’m excited. What a way to close out 2019.
Cats will open in theaters on December 20th.
The Call Of The Wild
Figures that the other big trailer to hit after Cats is one about a dog. Though, I didn’t imagine a film like this would be as CG heavy as the big Christmas musical. Why all the animals in this are completely CG, I don’t know, but I’m not a fan. It’s not even that it’s bad, for the most part, the work done here is really good, until they start moving around, and it looks way too fluid to look real. Aside from that, it does look cute, I like the idea of seeing Harrison Ford bonding with a dog, and it’s from Chris Sanders, who directed The Croods, How To Train Your Dragon, and Lilo & Stitch, so the people behind this are legit. I’m just not sold on the animals here.
The Call Of The Wild opens in theaters on February 21st, 2020.
Antebellum
I have no idea what is going on here, but boy, do I really want to know because this looks pretty exciting. This just dropped out of nowhere, and it’s already something I’m really looking forward to. The premise as described in the description under the video says, “Successful author Veronica Henley (Janelle Monáe) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.” So…yeah, OK, still doesn’t tell me much, but I’m very much sold on whatever this is.
Antebellum hits theaters on April 24th, 2020.
Emma.
This kinda stuff normally isn’t my type, but when done well, they can be fun, engaging, and compelling. It also doesn’t hurt that this looks incredible, probably since the director, Autumn de Wilde, has up until this point mostly been known for her work in photography. I’m very interested in this, especially because Anya Taylor-Joy has been great in everything she’s been in, and I’m curious to see her stretch some comedic muscles in something like this.

A Million Little Pieces
My thoughts on this hasn’t changed much since the first trailer came out a couple months back. I think it looks decent enough, there’s some interesting visual flair here and there, and while the subpar word-of-mouth isn’t great, I am gonna give it a fair shake. At the very least, some of these performances do seem affecting.
A Million Little Pieces will hit theaters on December 6th.
Avenue 5
Not a ton of trailers came out this week, so I figured I’d include this teaser for the upcoming HBO series from Armando Iannucci, who is just coming off the recently finished Veep for the same network. This looks pretty amusing, and I dig the idea of doing a comedy set in space that isn’t a Star Wars-esque action adventure flick. His sensibilities are seen through and through here, and it’s from a cast that looks to be doing some good stuff. I’ve realized that, especially after seeing Little Monsters, Josh Gad is remarkable at playing assholes. I’m also surprised by the production values here, it definitely looks like money has been put here. I’m very curious to see how this turns out, especially since what I’m getting here doesn’t seem to be enough story-wise for a whole series.
Avenue 5 will air on HBO on a currently unspecified date in January 2020.
