The Bikeriders

I feel like Sons Of Anarchy has held a bit of a monopoly on biker stories in Hollywood cause I can’t think of many of the top of my head. I’m really digging this. I do like Jeff Nichols as a filmmaker, and this looks like something of a step up for him in terms of scope, which is pretty exciting. The cast looks great, all the accents are fun. It just looks like a really engaging story, and it’s a subculture that I feel has largely been portrayed with a lot of stereotypes and cliches, so this story will be interesting to see unfold.

The Bikeriders hits theaters on December 1st.

The Boy And The Heron

Of course, this is going to be Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film, and not his last, which is hilariously expected given his track record of retiring and un-retiring for literally decades. Anyways, this looks amazing, as one would expect. I initially thought this was an adaptation of something, but nope, it’s an original story with semi-autobiographical elements. Which honestly makes this a lot more interesting. It does seem to remind me of something like Howl’s Moving Castle, which is probably one of my least favorites, but I’m still going to check it out, I’m not missing this.

The Boy And The Heron opens in theaters on December 8th.

When Evil Lurks

I honesty don’t remember much from Terrified, though according to the rating I gave it on IMDb, I must have liked it quite a bit at the time. I’m always down for a delightfully messed up horror movie, and this looks like it will fit that bill in spades. Spanish language horror has a very distinct and brutal flavor that is unique compared to stuff in the US and other countries, so I’m glad this filmmaker is getting more chances to explore his weird ideas on an accessible platform like Shudder. I’ll definitely give this a look.

When Evil Lurks hits select theaters on October 6th before streaming on Shudder on October 27th.

Pain Hustlers

Very surprised to learn that this is a David Yates picture. Doesn’t look like anything he’s done before, neither in its energy nor its visual palette. It’s a nice change of pace, I suppose. Even if this particular style of tackling a social issues-driven drama is a sleight of hand that is harder to pull off than a lot of people anticipate. I don’t know much about the story this is based on, aside from connections to the opioid crisis, which has gotten a lot of traction in Hollywood, but mostly to mixed results, and even that is being generous. This cast is certainly something to be excited about, but we’ll see if the hype is real once it’s out.

Paiin Hustlers will be released in select theaters on October 20th before premiering on Netflix on October 27th.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher

If Mike Flanagan is involved, I am watching. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I gotta say, though, this is a lot funnier than I was expecting. Not to say Flanagan is a humorless guy, but his general tone tends to lean on somber more than silly. This doesn’t look silly, but there’s more jokes here than I would have guessed going into it, and I like it. This cast assembled here is amazing, happy to see Kyleigh Curran, who was fantastic in Doctor Sleep, and you got Mark Hamill too, that’s just great. I also read that this is less of an adaptation of the titular Edgar Allen Poe short story, and it incorporates a bunch of Poe works, which makes sense, and makes for a more interesting look at how they tackle the material. I am very excited for this.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher hits Netflix on October 12th.

Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters

Well, this definitely looks expensive as hell. I guess it helps having a company like Apple on your side that has other things they need to be concerned about as opposed to their programming. Sure, here’s a couple hundred million dollars, that’s probably like a fraction of their phone development costs. Anyways, this looks cool. I was initially hesitant about this being a show, as opposed to a movie, but I’ve warmed up to it, and I have decided to put out some time to give this a shot because I am pretty much all in on the Monster-Verse, or whatever you wanna call this franchise. I like the scope of this, exploring different time periods, and having a human story centered in all this wild monster stuff. I hope it turns out good.

Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters premieres on Apple TV+ on November 17th.
