The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Hell yes! This looks absolutely stunning, and it’s a damn shame that none of the handful of theaters will be near me, so I’ll have to see it on Netflix instead. Either way, it’s great to see the Coens do another western. I am curious to see how they retrofitted a series into a feature, since that was the original intention, but from what I skimmed in its festival buzz, it didn’t really come up that often, so I guess it isn’t an issue. It’s a Coen brothers movie, of course I’m excited for this.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will be released on Netflix and select theaters November 16th.

The Beach Bum

This looks oddly upbeat for a Harmony Korine film, but I totally dig its vibe. This is one I’ve been anticipating since it was announced. It looks fun, the characters look wild, and it seems like a new direction for Korine. I’m very curious to see what he has here, and it’s annoying that we have to wait until next year to see it.

The Beach Bum will hit theaters March 22, 2019.

Captive State

So, it’s like a dystopian movie combined with alien invasion. That’s a solid premise. I’m surprised I haven’t heard anything about this while it was in production, especially given the involvement of some of the people here, with director and co-writer, Rupert Wyatt, in particular. It’s a neat teaser, so not a lot of information, but it has my interest. I’m curious to see how this turns out.

Captive State will be released in theaters on March 29, 2019.

Private Life

This looks delightful, and the fact that it’s a film by Tamara Jenkins, the filmmaker behind the 2007 film, The Savages, is icing on the cake. It does seem like another one of those upper-middle class New Yorker movies that kind of all look and feel the same, but when done well, they’re fun and thoughtful and very well performed. Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn look wonderful in here as well. This looks solid.

Private Life will begin streaming on Netflix October 5th.

Wildlife

I recall being somewhat underwhelmed, but still optimistic when I saw the teaser a while back, if only for the talent involved. This is definitely a better look at what Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan have in store. It’s definitely selling on the idea that the family dynamic is far more complex, especially from a kid’s point-of-view, and that seems to be the throughline here. The word-of-mouth from its festival runs have been very good, so I’m excited to see this.

Wildlife will be released in select theaters October 19th.

Her Smell

This is a little teaser released as the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and based on the things I heard, a pretty good representation of the film. It’s uncomfortable, a little obnoxious, hard to watch at times, but still captivating in the way a lot of wild rock stars tend to be. Apparently there were a lot of walkouts, but that only makes me more curious. It’s the latest from Alex Ross Perry, so at least there is an assured figure behind the madness.

Her Smell does not have an official release date yet.
