The 355

This actually looks pretty fun. It definitely looks a hell of a lot better than Simon Kinberg’s Dark Phoenix, that’s for sure. The spy stuff seems pretty generic, but as long as they fill it with enough engaging character beats and satisfying action sequences, I’m sure it’ll be a good time. I dig the cast, and that does seem to be a majority of the appeal here. I’ll definitely be looking forward to this.

The 355 hits theaters on January 15th, 2021.

The Witches

Unlike most, I feel most of Robert Zemeckis’ recent outings have had more hits than misses. I loved The Walk and Allied, I thought Flight was fine. Basically, I’m just trying to say he’s not the kind of filmmaker you should start discounting just yet. Although, having said that, this trailer doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence. It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen the Nicolas Roeg version, so I can’t do much comparison, though I will say the makeup work in that will be a hundred times better than the weird VFX here. I don’t want to dismiss it because I still have a fondness and fascination for Zemeckis, but I will be anticipating with caution.

The Witches will stream on HBO Max on October 22nd.

Kindred

I guess I appreciate that this trailer doesn’t bother with any attempt at trying to convince you the family is perfectly fine. They’re definitely up to something, the question is what. I am intrigued by this, which means the trailer does its job. Not much else to say about it since I’m not super aware of director, Joe Marcantonio, or its lead, Tamara Lawrance, but I do like Fiona Shaw and Jack Lowden. It’s an interesting look, and I am curious to see where this goes.

Kindred opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on November 6th.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

I haven’t really looked into on what the general consensus on this is, but I’m really liking this, and I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. I thoroughly enjoyed the first film, but after being underwhelmed by much of Sacha Baron Cohen’s following outputs, aside from a few moments from Who Is America?, I didn’t expect this to pack much of a punch, but it kind of did. I don’t know how the film itself will be, but I will say this is a promising trailer.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm will hit Amazon Prime on October 23rd.

His House

Yup, this definitely looks like it will totally be my jam. Sadly, I haven’t been very familiar with the apparently extensive work from Wunmi Mosaku until I saw her in the amazing Lovecraft Country, even if she did have minor and largely unmemorable roles in Batman v Superman and the first Fantastic Beasts. Sope Dirisu I recognize from Gangs Of London, which is also amazing, so the cast is aces. The setup is intriguing, I like me a good haunted house movie, and with the asylum seeker angle, it looks like it might bring something fresh to the table. Can’t wait to see it.

His House hits Netflix on October 30th.

Minari

Yup, this looks incredible. I’m a sucker for these kinds of immigrant stories, and I really dig the middle America setting. I get a very light Terrence Malick vibe from some of the visuals and ethereal music, but that could just be for the trailer, and not necessarily a reflection of the film’s style. Either way, I am totally in on this. I can’t wait to see it.

Minari will be released soon at a currently unspecified date.
