Summerland
This looks cute. Gemma Arterton has been one of those performers who has really grown on me, especially over the last five years or so. The rest of the cast is really good too, with folks like Tom Courtenay, Penelope Wilton, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw – who still hasn’t really blown up in the way she should have. The story itself seems intriguing and lovely. I wouldn’t say it’s one I’m highly anticipating, but I do look forward to seeing it.

Spelling The Dream
Ha! OK, sure. I guess it’s a bit surprising it took this long for someone to be like, “yeah, there seems to be an awful lot of brown kids in these spelling bees, what gives?” I’m just wondering how much those parents are gonna tone themselves down for the cameras because I highly doubt they’re all smiles in between competitions. Jokes aside, I am pretty curious about this, although, I also have an urge to just rewatch Bad Words.
Spelling The Dream hits Netflix on June 3rd.
The Outpost
Having taken a quick look at the details surrounding the Battle of Kamdesh, which this film is based on, it does seem like something that can lend itself to a compelling movie. It definitely seems like they’re stretching every dollar they have for what it’s worth, but it looks reasonably solid if you’re into these particular kinds of military movies. I also feel like it’s been a while since I’ve seen Orlando Bloom in something, as well as Caleb Landry Jones, who was practically in everything for a whole year in 2017, and then suddenly wasn’t. It honestly seems a bit basic to me, but if you’re excited, more power to you, I guess.

Antebellum
This is probably the best trailer out of all the ones released so far. It still doesn’t explain much, but at least I have a better understanding the general trajectory. Through some mysterious means, Janelle Monáe’s character is chosen by someone (or maybe an organization) and is sent to the past (or maybe another dimension?), and she has to figure her way out. Maybe it’ll be like a Groundhog Day situation, and just when she thinks she made it out, she ends up back in the same place. I don’t know, and I like that I still don’t know. It’s not often we have the opportunity to be surprised anymore, so I’m very curious to see how this plays out.
Antebellum is still scheduled to hit theaters on August 21st.
