So, I was mostly indifferent to the trailer. The only bit that made me laugh was the whole thing with the gun near the end. However, whoever put this trailer together needs to be put in time out because they made the ridiculous decision to not reveal that Iko Uwais is in this movie. I only found out because of the plot description under the trailer, and it took some pausing in the video to see that he actually plays the blonde guy beating Bautista and Nanjiani up. This is making me much more interested. Hopefully, this doesn’t waste him like Mile 22 did.
Stuber will hit theaters on July 12th.
The Addams Family
They really nailed the casting for this, and the designs are pretty great. Unfortunately, this really left me underwhelmed. Granted, I did grow up watching the two Sonnenfeld movies, and I think they’re damn near perfect, especially in balancing the light tone with a macabre imagery, while this one seems to lean a bit hard on a light, goofy tone. I’m sure kids might enjoy it, but I was hoping for something a skosh more atmospheric. But this is just a teaser, so maybe the trailer will catch my interest more.
The Addams Family will open in theaters on October 11th.
Anna
On one hand, this does look like Luc Besson making exactly the kind of movie you would expect him to. On the other hand, the action sequences look smooth, intense, and stylish as all hell. But on the secret, mutated third hand, I’m reluctant to be excited for a new Besson film given the multiple rape allegations that came out last year, plus the fact that he dated a 15 year old while he was literally twice her age back in the early 90s. And this is coming from someone who considered his last film, Valerian, to be one of my favorite films from 2017. Him doing one of these girl power actioners right now just doesn’t sit right with me, even if it does look fun.
Anna will release in theaters on June 21st.
Trial By Fire
I somehow haven’t heard about this case, but this does look interesting. I like the cast, Edward Zwick is a capable enough director, and it’s written by the guy who wrote Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire. The flaws in the criminal justice system is pretty ripe for compelling and thoughtful storytelling, and given the way things turn out for this particular case (which was spoiled by the top comment, but whatever), it could make for an emotional and thought provoking journey. I’m curious about it.
Trial By Fire will open in select theaters starting May 17th.
The Lion King
Yeah, I expressed my doubts about this before, and this does nothing to change them. Sure, the movie does look nice, I cannot even imagine all the work put into making these animals as photorealistic as they are. It’s just unfortunate that all that work is put into something so creatively unambitious. I don’t want to sound like a party pooper, but I just get nothing out of this, and it’s not just because of the expressionless faces everywhere. I just find it kind of depressing that there’s so much talent involved, and it’s all for…this. But hey, it’ll still make a billion dollars, and if you do have fun with this, more power to ya.
The Lion King comes out in theaters on July 19th.
The Last Summer
Ah, yes, I love the smell of teenage melodrama in the morning. This doesn’t look great, by any means, but I got a soft spot for movies like this. I don’t recognize much of the cast, but I do really like Jacob Latimore a lot. I’m sure I’ve described another trailer this way before, but I’ll say it again, it seems like the perfect kind of Netflix movie – something you might not be eager to see on the big screen, but can be a solid time waster.
The Last Summer will hit Netflix on May 3rd.
The Professor
Hahahahaha! Nope.
