Strays

Can you believe we’re getting two R-rated dog movies this year? This and Gendy Tartakovsky’s Fixed, which will be animated. This one is from Josh Greenbaum of Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar fame, a film I didn’t love like some folks, but I respected the throwback sensibilities, I would love to see more big comedies in that style. This is a fun follow up, and this trailer had me giggling for most of it, which is better than most comedy trailers tend to do. So, I’ll take this as a sign that we might have something really cool here. Can’t wait to see it.

Strays hits theaters on June 9th.

The Covenant

Given the delay of Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, we might end up having two Guy Ritchie films within a month of each other, which is fine by me. He’s in a phase at this point in his career where he is sort of all over the place in terms of tone and style, and I think it’s working out fairly well for him so far. I think Wrath Of Man was a real turning point for him after playing old hits with The Gentlemen, This looks like a different turn for him, and I’m curious to see how much of his style he is able to fit within the somber and serious sensibility of this story’s framework.

The Covenant opens in theaters on April 21st.

Paint

Hmm…I don’t know. I think the idea is fun in theory, having Owen Wilson play this Bob Ross-esque figure, but this whole conceit with the younger painter being brought in just feels like such a hackneyed premise that we’ve seen a million times. I’m hoping there’s more to it than just that. We’ll see. I’m not going to write this off yet, cause it does look interesting, and you can’t go wrong with Owen Wilson.

Paint will be released in select theaters on April 7th.

Bruiser

Now, where did this come from? This seems to have played in some festivals already, but I somehow haven’t heard of it. This looks amazing! I’m especially struck by the music here, very evocative stuff. Not familiar with Miles Warren, but I really dig Trevante Rhodes, and I like the way this is filmed, and the stuff that it’s exploring. This definitely has potential, and it’s one I am very excited to check out.

Bruiser premieres exclusively on Hulu on February 24th.

The Lost King

Stephen Frears is a fairly reliable filmmaker, and it’s nice to see him pop up from time to time. Plus, him collaborating on a script co-written by Steve Coogan is promising as well. I really dug the stuff that he’s written, that I’ve seen at least. Also, who doesn’t love Sally Hawkins, she’s an absolute treasure. Not much else to dig into, it looks charming and interesting. I’ll definitely check it out.

The Lost King opens in select theaters on March 24th.

My Happy Ending

I really like Andie MacDowell, I think she may have been among the first actors that I began to recognize when I was young, which makes sense considering she broke out in the early 90s. This seems like a pretty charming movie, even if it feels at times like the older equivalent to one of those sick teen movies we kept getting every so often several years back.

My Happy Ending hits theaters on February 24th.
