Spencer

Yeah, this looks terrific. I’m a little shocked by just how much this looks like Jackie in terms of aesthetics and vibe. I loved Jackie, I thought Pablo Larraín did something really interesting with the biopic formula, and I’m hoping he is able to do the same here. With this cast, Kristen Stewart in particular, and Jonny Greenwood doing the music, this is easily one of my most anticipated films for the rest of the year, and I can’t wait to check it out.

Spencer hits theaters on November 5th.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

I thought Homecoming was fine, and I enjoyed Far From Home better, so I imagine I would like this a lot if that trajectory means anything. I’ve always had my issues with the MCU Spider-Man not being the scrappy underdog that he typically is, instead being a protege for Iron Man, complete with his fancy toys. It looks like that won’t be much of an issue this time around, but will the nostalgia-bait be too much or will they strike a good balance? That’s the question. Hard to tell from the teaser, but if this goes full on bananas with the stuff they’re teasing with this premise, I think this could end up being a really fun time.

Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on December 17th.

Parallel Mothers

I still need to catch up to a lot of Pedro Almodóvar’s work, but I did see and really enjoy Pain And Glory, which was apparently a semi-autobiographical work. This looks pretty interesting, from the little bit of story information that it gives. I feel like the whole “baby not quite looking like the dad” thing will probably not end up being as big of an issue than this trailer lets on. Either way, it looks solid, Almodóvar is a great talent, so there’s no reason to be skeptical here. I’ll definitely be checking this out.

Parallel Mothers opens in select theaters on December  24th.

The Starling

Dem CG birds tho. Snark aside, this looks very pleasant and cute. Theodore Melfi is a really solid filmmaker, I really enjoyed both St. Vincent and Hidden Figures. He’s not the most challenging filmmaker out there, but as a maker of intimate, feel-good entertainment, he knows how to get it done. It’s nice to see folks like Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd in something that gives them the opportunity to stretch their dramatic muscles more. Can’t say I expect much from this, but I’m sure it’ll be fine.

The Starling opens in select theaters on September 17th before hitting Netflix on September 24th.

I’m Your Man

I’m all in on Dan Stevens being weird, add that to a German language sci-fi rom-com, and you pretty much got me hooked. I haven’t seen the Netflix series Unorthodox, so I don’t know exactly what to expect tonally or stylistically from Maria Schrader, but I’m liking the vibe I’m getting from this trailer. I wasn’t as big a fan of Spike Jonze’s Her, so maybe this might scratch similar thematic itches for me that his film couldn’t quite do. This is definitely one I’ll keep on my radar.

I’m Your Man hits selects theaters on September 24th.

Nightbooks

There just isn’t enough kid-freindly horror these days, and ones that aren’t afraid to really put the kid characters in danger, so I’m just glad to see Netflix make something like this, and with Sam Raimi producing and David Yarovesky of Brightburn fame directing, I don’t see why this couldn’t be a fairly easy win. Also, if Krysten Ritter starts chewing scenery, I’m pretty sure I’ll end up loving this. My expectations are modest, but I’m hoping this turns out great.

Nightbooks will be released on Netflix on September 15th.
