Spaceman

Gotta say, not at all the premise I was expecting when it came to the Adam Sandler space movie by the guy who directed Chernobyl. But I do like what I see. I like how intimate and character focused it is, how psychological it seems to be. I’m sure it’s all in his head, but it’ll be cool to see how the filmmakers have fun playing with that psychology. Really intrigued by this.

Spaceman hits Netflix on March 1st.

Abigail

This looks like a hoot. Though, I gotta say. Aesthetically, vibe-wise, it does feel like Radio Silence is treading similar water to their breakout film Ready Or Not. Which, hey, you know how to do a format well, then you don’t have to fix what isn’t broken, but given how well I felt they handled the recent Scream film, I would hope to get something different than yet another violent death match taking place in a dimly lit, yellow tinted mansion. But like I said, still looks fun, great cast, fun premise, I’ll definitely check it out.

Abigail opens in theaters on April 19th.

Cobweb

New Kim Jee-woon film! Very exciting! I love his work. And I don’t think I’ve seen many films that deal with the Korean film industry itself, so that will be a fun little setting for the filmmakers to explore. I like it when directors explore the industry they work in. This looks like a good time, and I know a couple of these actors are heavy hitters, especially Song Kang-ho, so

Cobweb hits select theaters and VOD platforms on February 9th.

Orion And The Dark

The fact that there’s a DreamWorks movie written by Charlie Kaufman and apparently narrated by Werner Herzog (after looking it up on Wikipedia) and this is the first I’m hearing about it weeks before release is wild to me. It has a kind of Inside Out vibe. I feel like it’s been a while since Kaufman has lent his skills to a pure comedy, probably since his days as a sitcom staff writer. I’m definitely intrigued by the notion, so I’ll be checking this out for sure.

Orion And The Dark will be released on Netflix on February 2nd.

Lola

So, this is the directorial debut of Nicola Peltz, who I’m only recently finding out is a nepo baby (daughter of a billionaire, recently married into the Beckham family as well), so I’m sure people will be totally chill about her making and starring in a movie about poverty. Jokes aside, it’s all about execution, and it’s hard to tell how things will be from a trailer. Cause the trailer itself looks fine, it maybe a touch overbearing, but it looks competently made, I like the color palette, the actors seem to be putting in the work, so we’ll see how it turns out.

Lol opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on February 9th.

Pictures Of Ghosts

This is documentary from Kleber Mendonça Filho, who did the wonderful Bacurau a few years back. I believe he’s done docs before, but I haven’t seen them. It looks to be a nostalgic look back at the theaters he would frequent in his childhood, and how times have changed, attitudes changed about the way people treat the cinema as a place of community and celebrating art. At least, that’s what I gather from this trailer. It’s an interesting thing for a filmmaker to reflect on, and I’m very interested in seeing more about it and learning more about the director and his background.

Pictures Of Ghosts opens in select theaters on January 26th.
