Sonic The Hedgehog
In case a part of you was wondering how bad Detective Pikachu could have been because…wow. It’s so late 90s/early 2000s, a part of me is wondering if this is purposefully meant to be throwback or if the filmmakers really just couldn’t figure out what to do with this. I don’t know much about the character to have any big opinion on this, but…man…this is rough.
Sonic The Hedgehog opens in theaters on November 8th.
Crawl
I admittedly haven’t been much of a fan of Alexandre Aja’s films. They’re competent films, but they just haven’t really done much for me, even his Piranha 3D, which I remember people really enjoying. Having said that, I’m kinda sold by its fairly minimalist, no nonsense approach here, assuming the trailer is reflective of the actual movie. Almost reminds me a bit on how they handled The Shallows. And plus, it’s been a while since we got a good gator movie. I’ll take it.
Crawl will release in theaters on July 12th.
Blinded By The Light
I am so damn excited for this! Bend It Like Beckham was like a revelatory experience for me, and Gurinder Chadha is a great storyteller. The word-0f-mouth on this from its Sundance premiere has been great, and I’ve been looking forward to it ever since. Plus, I dig me some Bruce Springsteen, so it’ll be cool to see a movie that revolves around his music. I can’t wait to see this.
Blinded By The Light will be released in theaters on August 14th.
Ophelia
I remember hearing about this when it premiered at Sundance last year, and just completely forgot about it. I kinda assumed it had already released, and I simply missed it. But hey, it looks like it’s finally coming out courtesy of IFC, and I’m glad, it looks really cool. I’m always up for a good Shakespeare reimagining, and the cast here is rock solid. I’m totally into this.
Ophelia will hit select theaters on June 28th and VOD platforms on July 5th.
Deadwood: The Movie
I’ve been meaning to re-watch this show again because I don’t think I was able to fully appreciate it seeing it at a fairly young age. This still looks really cool, just speaking as someone who loves westerns, and it’s great to see the cast back, almost as if it hasn’t been well over a decade since the show was cancelled. I’m looking forward to this.
Deadwood: The Movie will premiere on HBO on May 31st.
Ladies In Black
It took me a second to realize that the girl we first see is Angourie Rice, who most of us will know as Ryan Gosling’s daughter from The Nice Guys and Betty from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Here she gets to use her native Australian accent. Unfortunately, this trailer isn’t doing much for me. It doesn’t seem to establish who we’re supposed to follow, it keeps going on these weird digressions that mean nothing without context, and at two-and-a-half minutes, it’s way too long. I still don’t fully know what this is about, and not in an intriguing way. It could be good, but it’s not doing a good job at selling me.
Ladies In Black will hit VOD platforms on May 21st.
The Society
This feels like something I really would have dug when I was a teenager, but now, I’m just kinda bored of this genre. When you take all the structure and safety nets away of civilization, our instincts will push us into brutality and tribalism, yawn, been there, done that, I’ve read Lord of the Flies plenty of times already. I don’t see what this is adding to that genre aside from a fairly modern aesthetic. It looks well made and all, so maybe it could be decent, I just don’t see myself as being a part of its audience.
The Society will release its episodes on Netflix on May 10th.
