Soft & Quiet

I’m very intrigued by this. I like the ideas this is trying to explore, and I think having it centered on a group of right wing women adds a bit of an edge that wouldn’t have worked quite as strongly if you just had a bunch of dudes doing the same thing, it would’ve felt more typical. I’m curious what exactly goes wrong since the trailer goes from zero to 100 in about a second, but I would like to see for myself and find out. This is one I’ll be keeping my eye out for.

Soft & Quiet opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on November 4th.

A Man Called Otto

I didn’t get around the original Swedish film, A Man Called Ove, so I don’t know how this compares. I guess I am surprised at how light this is, like a pretty standard feel-good dramedy considering its awards season pull. It is amusing to see Tom Hanks as a curmudgeon. Marc Forster is directing this one, and he has a pretty mixed filmography, but there are films of his I have liked, and it doesn’t seem like there’s much you can do terribly with a film like this. Can’t say I’ll be highly anticipating this, but I’ll see it.

A Man Called Otto opens in select theaters on December 25th before going wide on January 13th, 2023.

Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania

This looks really fun and all, but I can’t help but feel like the small scale charms that made the other two Ant-Man films so delightful are mostly gone here, as well as most of the humor. But granted, this is probably another example of an early Marvel trailer that makes the film look a lot more serious than it actually is, it’s something they have made quite the habit of doing. I’m particularly excited to see Jonathan Majors, he’s always great, and I’m curious how much of a role his character will be playing in the MCU going forward, as I don’t think this will be the last time we’ll see him. There’s definitely stuff to be excited about, I just hope Peyton Reed doesn’t lose grasp of what made the other two films so charming.

Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania will hit theaters on February 13th, 2023.

Stutz

This is a pretty interesting idea for a documentary, I’m surprised we haven’t seen more like it, though maybe there are, and I just don’t know about them. I think there is a lot of value in what Hill is trying to do here, offering people a way to process and heal the way he was able to do with therapy. I’m not sure if all advice applies to all people, I think sometimes people need their own way to approach these kinds of things, but I doubt much harm would come from this. I don’t know if this is something I’m particularly interested in seeing, but I’m glad it’s out there.

Stutz will be released on Netflix on November 14th.

Utama

I heard a lot of good things about this one, and I can see why. It looks gorgeous, love the landscape shots, love the music, not sure how much of that is just for the trailer or it’s actually from the film, but it’s cool nonetheless. It’s like it’s filmed with the intensity of a Sergio Leone western, but there’s no villain or action to it, it’s just pure survival, and that’s pretty interesting. Great visual storytelling just from this trailer, so if the movie is as good as this trailer lets on, this might be something really special.

Utama opens in select theaters starting November 4th before expanding in the following weeks.

Talk about ending on a strong note, this is a film I had no idea existed until I saw the trailer for this post. It’s definitely near the top of my radar, I like the vibe the filmmaker is going with here, it looks tense, yet warm, and melancholic, it looks super interesting. The trailer doesn’t really put a spotlight on it, but after looking this up, it is based on a true story, and having read a little bit about it, it’s definitely an interesting story to tell and explore. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what Dina Amer has in store for us.
