Silent Night
New John Woo! This is not a drill! Drop everything cause the king is coming to show us how it’s done! Obviously, I’m very excited for this one, Woo is on the all-time great action directors, and this is looking just as amazing as one would hope for his return to Hollywood after so long. Granted, I have a strong feeling there will be some discourse about how it’s another movie about a white guy taking revenge on a bunch of people-of-color, like with the Death Wish remake or Peppermint, and I don’t think that discussion is unwarranted, but…I’m sorry, that discussion doesn’t really interest me in this context, a movie that is very obviously presented with a heightened sensibility unlike the other examples given, which were intended to be taken far more seriously. But, we’ll just have to wait and see how it plays out in the film. I for one can’t wait.
Silent Night hits theaters on December 1st.
Argylle
I feel like a lot of people have turned on Matthew Vaughn, and to an extent, I can understand, but I don’t know, I’m still mostly on board with his particular brand of extravagant, weird, and mean action. This is actually the first movie he’s directed that isn’t an adaptation of something, so I really don’t know what to expect, or how this will differ from something like the Kingsman films. I’m willing to give it a chance, but we won’t find out until next year.
Argylle hits theaters on February 2nd, 2024.
Down Low
Ah, did not realize there was a whole dead body angle to the premise, I thought it was some kind of hangout movie. Oh well, this looks like it could be pretty fun too. Even if the dead body bit feels a bit derivative and unnecessary for the stuff that they’re exploring. But who knows, maybe there’s more to it. The trailer does have a couple laughs, the cast looks strong. I haven’t heard much from its festival run, but I am intrigued, and I’ll be checking it out when it hits.
Down Low will be released on digital platforms on October 10th.
Leave The World Behind
Quite the star studded cast here. I haven’t heard of this book, so I don’t know much about this. And the trailer itself doesn’t really do much to make it clear what’s happening. But it definitely has my curiosity, that’s for sure, especially considering the talent involved here. Usually a film having a cast this strong across the board is usually a sign that either they really believe in the project or they all owed the producer a favor, and for this, I feel like it’s the former. Has me hooked, I will say that.
Leave The World Behind will hits theaters on a currently unspecified date in November before streaming exclusively on Netflix on December 8th.
The Mill
I find Lil Rel Howery’s general vibe to be a little too goofy to take seriously as a dramatic horror lead, but I am pretty curious to see where this is going. It’s got a solid enough hook, looks like it didn’t take a whole lot to get made, could be a nice, clean 90 minute thriller. Don’t have much expectations going in, and that could end up working in the movie’s favor. We’ll see when it hits Hulu.
The Mill premieres exclusively on Hulu on October 9th.
The Toxic Avenger
I’ve been excited for this ever since it was announced, and I’m so happy we finally have some footage. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Macon Blair doing a Toxic Avenger remake, but I am really digging what I’m seeing so far, even though this doesn’t give too much aside from the general vibe, which has a very James Gunn feel to it. Not super surprising since he came from the Troma world. I wonder if there will be a Lloyd Kaufman cameo. The word on this is pretty outrageous in all the best ways, so I am very excited for this.
The Toxic Avenger has no scheduled release date yet, but is estimated for an early 2024 release.
