Shortcomings

Looks nice! I like Randall Park, he’s always been a delightful presence in pretty much everything I’ve seen him in. Always Be My Maybe was a pretty cute rom-com. And while he doesn’t have a hand in writing this, you can still can feel his vibe from the overall atmosphere of the whole thing. Admittedly, I feel like I’ve seen lots of stories in this vein, but I’m sure they can find a way to put a fresh spin on things. I’ll be looking out for this.

Shortcomings hits select theaters on August 4th.

Cobweb

I already have a theory as to what exactly might be going on. I won’t say it on the off-chance it actually spoils the movie, but if it does turn out to be the case, I wouldn’t be mad. This does look pretty fun, even if, as I said with Shortcomings, I feel like I’ve already seen this kinda story a bunch of times already. Even some of the sets look like replicas of locations I’ve seen in horror films within the past decade. The cast loos good though, some of the scares look creepy. I’ll give it a shot.

Cobweb opens in theaters on July 21st.

Poor Things

Can’t remember if I talked about the teaser when that first came out, but this gives me such a strong Jean-Pierre Jeunet vibe. But given that it’s Yorgos Lanthimos, it’s probably gonna be a bit weirder, a bit more sinister, but we’ll just have to see. I haven’t so much as heard of the book that this is based on, but I am so in for this. This looks so cool and imaginative, and everyone looks totally committed to its weirdness.

Poor Things opens in theaters on September 8th.

Landscape With Invisible Hand

I haven’t heard of this book, so I was not prepared whatsoever when the alien stuff started showing up. That is definitely quite the turn. But I like it. It’s weird, it gives the story some added layers. I’ve enjoyed Cory Finley’s films so far, and this does look like his biggest feature yet. I’m very intrigued by what I’m seeing.

Landscape With Invisible Hand will be released in theaters on August 18th.

They Cloned Tyrone

This looks amazing, and I don’t mean just visually. I wouldn’t have expected this from the guy who wrote Creed II, but it seems like he has a wild imagination. I’m getting a bit of They Live vibes from the trailer, lots of 70s conspiracy stuff, with some Blaxploitation elements thrown in there. I love me a good genre mish-mash, and I’m definitely curious to see what the big secret is. Can’t wait to check this out.

They Cloned Tyrone hits Netflix on July 21st.

Maximum Truth

I’m pretty iffy on political comedies in the US, I may have mentioned it before, but I feel like we are generally not very good at satire. But I do like Ike Barinholtz, and I like Dylan O’Brien as well. There’s definitely potential here, and I’m hoping the filmmakers are able to keep a deft hand when dealing with some of the more absurdist moments. I’ll keep an eye out for this, it could turn out pretty fun.

Maximum Truth hits select theaters and VOD platforms on June 23rd.
