Scoob!

Yeah, looks cute. They seem to be downplaying the whole Dynomutt, Dog Wonder aspect up until the ending there, but I’m curious if most people will even understand that it’s a sort of crossover between other pre-existing Hanna-Barbera properties. Also, and I know this might just be a *me* thing, but the characters have sounded more or less the same ever since they first appeared, and it’s a little weird hearing some of these celebrity voices behind them. I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but it just makes the whole thing seem off.

Scoob! hits theaters on May 15th, 2020.

Fantasy Island

I don’t have much of an attachment to the Fantasy Island TV show, as I’m sure is the same for most people around my age, who likely haven’t even heard of the thing, but from the bits that I saw, the turn to horror isn’t that big of a stretch. But I admit, I am really bummed that there doesn’t seem to be the equivalent of the Tattoo character from the show, that seems like a wasted opportunity. I don’t know, it could be fun, but it doesn’t seem to be doing as much new or interesting as I think it could have.

Fantasy Island opens in theaters on February 14th, 2020.

Seberg

Jean Seberg’s life is a deeply fascinating one, so I’m curious to see how the filmmakers tackle it. Kristen Stewart has been having a really great run recently, so I’m sure she’s going to do some good work, at the very least. The word-of-mouth on this hasn’t been great, which is a bit of a bummer, but I am still interested in seeing this for the story and the performances.

Seberg will be released in theaters on December 13th.

The Way Back

This has to be pretty good, not just because Gavin O’Connor is a good filmmaker, but this must hit pretty close to home for Ben Affleck, considering his struggles recently. It does look formulaic, but it looks like it’s doing a lot of good things within that formula. Sports movies can be fun, even for people like me who don’t care about sports, as long as they put character front and center, and that seems to be the case here. And hey, I’m all for non-IP movies like this going to theaters instead of straight to streaming.

The Way Back opens in theaters on March 6th, 2020.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run

I haven’t seen the show in forever, but I have seen the movies, and I enjoyed the hell out of Sponge Out Of Water, which was delightfully surreal. This looks fun. You sold me on the Keanu Reeves cameo, and there’s some really good gags in here. The animation looks great. The same creative team behind the last film are here, so I’m expecting this to be a good time if the last one is of any indication.

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run hits theaters on May 22nd, 2020.

Knives And Skin

I received a screener link for this, so expect a review on here a few days or so before this opens. I’m not really getting a Twin Peaks vibe as some of these pull quotes would suggest, but I am getting the vibes of all the stuff that were heavily influenced by Twin Peaks. I don’t even mean that in a bad way, the weirder something is, the more intrigued I am. It’s definitely using a familiar template, but as long as Jennifer Reeder puts in something fresh, I can see having a good time with this.

Knives And Skin hits select theaters and VOD platforms on December 6th.

Sonic The Hedgehog

I think this film should put to rest the idea that some filmmakers, especially from Hollywood, are lazy and don’t care about their work. Clearly, the people behind this film clearly wanted to give the people what they want, so they put in countless hours of work to get the design of Sonic right, and in a way that will satisfy fans. And all this work is done in the service of a film that…still looks pretty bad. Sorry, maybe it’s just me not having any connection to the character, but nothing here is appealing to me in the slightest. My biggest hope is that Jim Carrey’s comic stylings gets a laugh or two.

Sonic The Hedgehog will be released in theaters on February 14th, 2020.
