Sanctuary

Interesting premise. Not familiar with this director, but Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott are two really talented performers, and they both tend to have good instincts with picking projects, so I am more intrigued given their involvement. I can see this potentially becoming repetitive or stale after a while, but the word seems good, and it looks fairly well made. I usually like Neon’s output, so I’ll definitely be looking forward to this one.

Sanctuary hits select theaters on May 19th.

Insidious: The Red Door

I never would have guessed that Patrick Wilson’s directorial debut will be an Insidious sequel, but hey, I’m all here for it. I like this franchise a lot, I dig how nutty it is, how weird, imaginative, and strange it can be. Every sequel brings some odd new idea, and while I don’t think they’ve been super scary since the first, I think they do a good job at handling tension and balancing characters that we care about. So, I’m absolutely excited to check this out. Even if some of the story details are a bit too vague for a full trailer, in my humble opinion.

Insidious: The Red Door hits theaters on July 7th.

The Starling Girl

Solid trailer. I did some digging, and apparently the film is inspired by a relationship the director had when she was young with an older man. Stuff like that is interesting, and the religious angle is something that speaks to me as well having grown up in a very traditional and religious household, though not a Christian one. I’ve only seen Eliza Scanlen in a handful of things, but she has done very well in all of them, so I’m curious to see her tackle a role with a bit more meat on its bones.

The Starling Girl opens in theaters on May 12th.

The Last Voyage Of The Demeter

I am very pumped for this. This is from director, André Øvredal, of Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Mortal, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark fame, he’s a terrific horror director, and I just love the idea that we have a film adapting a single chapter of a book. It’s a fun way to create new stories in an era dominated by IP driven projects. Plus, that little bit of Smashing Pumpkin’s “Bullet With Butterfly Wing?” Chef’s kiss.

The Last Voyage Of The Demeter will be released in theaters on August 11th.

White Bird

I don’t really get why this has to be attached to Wonder. Are any of these people side characters in Wonder? What’s the connection? It’s so bizarre since it seems to have such a different vibe to it. Marc Forster is a decent enough filmmaker, but I don’t know if he’s good enough to make something out of material that feels this light and generic. I’ll keep an open mind, but I don’t know, this trailer doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.

White Bird opens in select theaters on August 8th.

All The Light We Cannot See

Cool, another project involving the Nazis. Didn’t expect the next film from Shawn Levy to be something this heavy. And honestly, this trailer has already gotten on my bad side because it’s using the exact same version of “Clair de Lune” that was user perfectly in the trailer for Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. Like, they didn’t even bother to find a different rendition, and the way it’s edited…the effect is truly night and day, the medley of image and music doesn’t have the same impact here at all. I’m surprised. Usually Netflix is less sloppy with their trailers. But anyway, it doesn’t look bad, it looks fine enough, not sure if I’ll make the time to watch this series, but we’ll see.

All The Light We Cannot See hits Netflix November 2nd.
