Roma
You know a trailer for a Netflix movie means business when their logo doesn’t play in the beginning, and the end of the video only talks about the film being released in select theaters. But you wouldn’t expect any less when you’re dealing with someone like the brilliant Alfonso Cuarón. This trailer is stunning (it’s also worth noting that he is also doing the cinematography here according to IMDb), and I’m very excited to see what he does with this.
Roma does not have a release date yet, but will be released in select theaters and on Netflix later this year.
Green Book
Oh my God, this is directed by one of the Farrelly brothers! I guess Dumb and Dumber To didn’t scratch that road trip movie itch. But to be honest, this looks pretty entertaining. Viggo Mortensen with that Italian accent and doing his back-and-forth with Mahershala Ali is enough to get me excited. I’m…a little worried to see how Peter Farrelly handles racism, but he is working with two co-writers, so maybe they’ll keep each other in check, even if they are all white. Can’t say I’m “excited,” but I’m curious.
Green Book will be released in theaters on November 21st.
Arizona
Danny McBride playing a crazy kidnapper in a dark comedy? Sign me up! I heard this played at some festivals, but I haven’t heard much about it, which maybe isn’t the best sign. However, I’m sold by the cast and as someone who loves dark comedies (at least when they’re done right), this has some solid gags, and neat premise. I hope it lives up to it, and even if it doesn’t, a wacky McBride performance will be more than enough to keep me engaged.
Arizona will hit select theaters and VOD platforms on August 24th.
What Men Want
I haven’t seen Nancy Meyers’ What Women Want in a long time, so I don’t know how well it has aged, but this looks like a lot of fun as a clever update/reversal on the concept. Taraji P. Henson is a great enough performer to elevate anything she’s in, no matter how trashy (cough, Acrimony, cough), plus there’s a solid cast of comedy actors here that makes me think even if the film isn’t all that good, I’m at least going to get a couple killer lines here and there. Seems weirdly early to release a trailer for this, but hey, I know about it now, and I’m certainly curious.
What Men Want will be released on January 11th.
The Guilty
This reminds me of that Halle Berry movie, The Call, except way better. I’ve heard some great things from when it played at festivals, and it looks like the praise might ring true here. It looks intense, the one-location gimmick is clever, and it seems like you have a compelling character at the center of it. We don’t get a lot of these kinds of thrillers as often as we used to, so I’m very much looking forward to this.
The Guilty will be released in select theaters October 19th.
All About Nina
This looks like it could be fun. I like Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and I’m always interested in any story that takes a dive into the world of stand up comedy. Seeing Common here was a neat little surprise too. It seems like one of those nice movies you can sit down and really relax too, but not at the expense of delivering a meaty narrative about a complicated central character. I’ll keep an eye out for this one.
All About Nina will be released in select theaters September 28th.
Climax
I briefly talked about this a while ago, but this is the first domestic trailer for the new Gaspar Noé film. This looks absolutely wild, and the idea of a deranged dance party sounds exactly like my kind of crazy. Not much else to say really, I just hope it’s really good.
The release date has not been announced yet, but it will be sometime this fall.
An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn
When the music started in this trailer, my first thought was, “hey, is this by the guy who made The Greasy Strangler?” And sure enough, halfway through the trailer, it says “From the director of The Greasy Strangler.” I really enjoyed that film and it’s surreal and its particular brand of gross out humor, so I’m definitely interested in seeing what this guy cooks up with a cast like this. It looks amusing enough, if nowhere near as gross (at least from what we see here).
