Robin Hood
Boy, that looks unfortunate. Talk about getting King Arthur: Legend of the Sword flashbacks (and it’s worth noting that an earlier draft of the script was written by one of the King Arthur writers). I mean, I’m honestly all for weird, anachronistic action versions of old stories. But King Arthur was the kind of movie that only briefly indulges in the quirks of its director, Guy Ritchie, before diving into mostly generic territory. It looks a bit like the same case here.I do like this cast, and at the very least, it looks like it will be a competently made production. I like that is does seem more bright and colorful compared to King Arthur, so I suppose not all hope is lost. However, I’m not holding my breath for this.
Robin Hood will be released just in time for Thanksgiving on November 21st.
Teen Titans Go! To The Movies
You know what? “Deadpool, but for kids” is a pretty ingenious hook. I find most of this trailer really funny, and honestly, more of what I wish Deadpool was. The meta stuff in Deadpool feels so uninspired, and reduced to a couple lines here and there, while this one goes so meta it practically breaks the reality of the movie (which is how I like it).
Apparently, folks weren’t too keen on this show, which is understandable to the extent that the it wasn’t what a lot of fans wanted after the original Teen Titans show, and especially after the abrupt cancellation of Young Justice (though it is getting a revival later this year). I can see the childlike humor getting irritating if the jokes start falling flat, and I hope that doesn’t become the case with the film because I’m more or less sold on it.

A Simple Favor
Paul Feig directing a (even more) comedic Gone Girl riff starring Anna Kendrick as a blogger investigating the disappearance of her friend played by Blake Lively? I am so in. Feig directed one of the funniest studio comedies in recent memory with Spy, so to see him tackle something like this is really cool.
Also, Feig is not particularly great with action, so it’s good to know that this is a genre more driven by dialogue and crazy plot turns. I hope the film is as stylish as the trailer, especially after Game Night showed how much better a studio comedy can be if you put effort into creating a visually distinct flair. Either way, I’m excited for this.
A Simple Favor will hit theaters September 14th.
Monsters And Men
It’s interesting seeing a trailer for this not too long after seeing the one for Blindspotting, as they both deal in similar subject matter but with very different approaches. This looks a bit more traditional than Blindspotting, but that doesn’t make it any less effective – if done right. This looks like solid work, and the word out of Sundance is good, where it won an award. It would be ideal to be at a point where we don’t need movies like this, but given the state of things, we need more stories like this now more than ever. I hope it can deliver.
There’s an October 5th release date I found for Monsters And Men, but it’s not on any of the official websites, so take that with a grain of salt. Regardless, the film will come out in the fall.
Kin
This looks cool. We don’t get enough of these weird, little sci-fi movies since most of the money tends to go to bigger budget stuff. It’s worth noting that the writer/director duo, Jonathan and Josh Baker, are adapting their 2014 short film, Bag Man, which – by the way – you can see on Vimeo on this link right now if you’d like. Not a whole lot to go through, the trailer is simple enough, I like the way it looks, and I hope these guys get to bring their vision to the big screen.
Kin will be released on August 31st.
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger
I haven’t read many Cloak and Dagger comics except for the few times they’ve ran into Spider-Man, so I’m not entirely sure what to expect with this new series, and that is somewhat exciting. Plus, this is a much better and more interesting trailer than the one Marvel released several months ago.
Though, I would’ve at least checked out the pilot episode regardless of how it looked because it was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed the films like Love & Basketball and Beyond the Lights. She’s a wonderful filmmaker, and I’m really interested in seeing her apply her sensibilities to this genre.
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger premieres June 7th at 8pm EST on Freeform.
