Peter Pan & Wendy

Of course, this one goes straight to Disney+, the one guy who made a Disney remake that wasn’t trash has a new one coming, and they don’t even put it to theaters. I don’t understand Disney sometimes. This looks pretty good to me honestly. Granted, a lot of that has to do with David Lowery being behind it, and having loved his version of Pete’s Dragon. Unlike so many of these, this actually looks like a movie, it’s lit like a movie, it’s framed like a movie, and not like a VFX reel or cheap looking TV movie. Not saying that it isn’t possible for this to be bad, but Lowery has yet to let me down.

Peter Pan & Wendy streams exclusively on Disney+ starting April 28th.

Somewhere In Queens

This looks nice. It’s cool to see Ray Romano finally get behind the camera. Definitely digging the lowkey, slice-of-life vibes, all the family stuff, and the cast looks like they’re having a lot of fun here. Doesn’t seem like it’s reinventing the wheel or anything, but it looks really solid, and I’ll be checking this one out for sure.

Somewhere In Queens hits theaters on April 21st.

Rare Objects

As it went along, I feel like things got a bit too schmaltzy for my taste, but it doesn’t look terrible or anything. I don’t recall seeing All We Had, Katie Holmes’ directorial debut, but it looked solid enough. And this does have a decent enough premise about growing up, finding yourself, and your place in the world. But something about the trailer isn’t really speaking to me. Maybe the film itself is different. If the word on it is good, I’ll give it a shot.

Rare Objects opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on April 14th.

About My Father

Gotta say, probably shouldn’t have given away that ending peacock joke in the trailer, that probably would’ve killed with a crowd who wasn’t already exposed to it. Good joke. The movie itself? Looks fine enough. I’m honestly not super familiar with Sebastian Maniscalco’s standup comedy, I only know him from the bits of acting he’s done here and there. It’s definitely a more over-the-top look at the Italian-American family experience compared to Somewhere In Queens, but I can see this having its charms, even if the trailer itself didn’t make me laugh that much. I’ll keep my eye out for it.

About My Father will be released in theaters on May 26th.

Wildflower

Looks well and fine enough, I suppose. I think the only thing going against this film is the thematic similarities with the most recent Best Picture winner, CODA. There are a lot of things that are straight up the same, even down to the female lead confiding with a local boy that she has a thing for. The only major difference seems to be, at least, just based on my impressions of this trailer, is that the lead doesn’t have a particular goal in mind, like the one in CODA had for singing. The cast is good though, so I don’t doubt this will be well acted. As for everything else, though, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Wildflower opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on March 23rd.

FUBAR

As if it were the late 80s and early 90s again, Stallone and Schwarzenegger are mirroring each other’s career paths. Stallone just had his very first TV series with the awesome Tulsa King, and now Schwarzenegger is going to be in a series on Netflix, and one that is created by the creator of Amazon’s Reacher series, which I loved. I’m a little nervous that this is going to lean more on the comedy side of things, mostly because it brings flashbacks of stuff like Killing Gunther. But I’m always here for Arnold, so I can’t wait to see this.

FUBAR will premiere on Netflix starting May 25th.
