Past Lives

This looks good, like really, really, really good. I wouldn’t be surprised if Wong Kar-wai was an influence, perhaps not so much visually, but in the writing. It just gives me that vibe. The yearning, the stuff left unsaid, in between the words. Powerful stuff. I know Celine Song has only one big credit at this point, which is as a staff writer on that Wheel Of Time show, and that’s it. But this shows a lot of promise, and I can’t wait to see it.

Past Lives will hit theaters at a currently unspecified date this summer.

The Pope’s Exorcist

Gotta say, had a bit of a laugh when Franco Nero turns out to be the Pope, cause I remember that line from John Wick 2, where he shows up asking John if he was visiting Italy to take out the Pope. I hope Crowe punches the demon right out of that boy. Anyways, this looks kinda trashy, but considering Crowe as the lead, and Julius Avery directing, this could potentially be a lot of fun if they take this over-the-top approach for the whole thing. I doubt it will be as insane as The Devil Conspiracy, but there’s always a chance.

The Pope’s Exorcist opens in theaters on April 14th.

Carmen

100% makes sense to me that the director of this film is primarily known for dance and choreography (also Natalie Portman’s husband, the two met during Black Swan). I don’t know much at all about the source material this is based on, so I can’t speak to all that much, it is a teaser trailer after all. But I love the vibes, I love the visual sensibility, and the way it seems to incorporate dance into a lot of the blocking and the movement of the actors, even within scenes that are seemingly not musical based. Definitely one I’ll look out for.

Carmen is set to hit theaters on a currently unspecified date later this year.

Boston Strangler

The budget here looks fairly sizable, I’m surprised they would just throw this into Hulu. It looks really solid, even if it’s a bit of a standard genre exercise. Plus, you got a collection of great actors here, good production values, and a compelling true crime narrative on top of all that. I will definitely check this one out.

Boston Strangler will be released exclusively on Hulu on March 17th.

Smoking Causes Coughing

This feels less like a riff on superhero cinema, and more like a riff on Power Rangers, either of which I would’ve been fine with cause this looks like fun! I’m pretty much always up for some of Quentin Dupieux’s particular brand of nonsense cinema. This looks really fun, silly, and goofy, right up my alley.

Smoking Causes Coughing hits select theaters and VOD platforms on March 31st.

Tetris

This also looks kinda silly, not gonna lie, but I hope it doesn’t go against the film. I wonder how accurate this all is, I know the acquisition was tense, but on this level, I don’t know. Plus, I find Egerton’s accent to be a bit off. That said, I’m still curious about the film, it’s directed by Jon S. Baird, who made Filth, which I enjoyed, and Stan & Ollie, which I loved. Could be a pretty good time at the very least.

Tetris will premiere exclusively on Apple TV+ on March 31st.
