Night Swim

So, apparently this is based on a short film by the director. It’s cool to see these small filmmakers being found by guys like James Wan and being given opportunities to make something, kind of like what they did with Lights Out. I’m not sure what to make of the film itself. I don’t know if this is a paranormal thing or maybe a riff on the Creature From The Black Lagoon or what, but it intrigues me, and Wan generally has pretty good instincts as a producer. So, I’m in for whatever this is.

Night Swim hits theaters on January 5th, 2024.

Monster

Love it, can’t wait, Hirokazu Kore-eda is one of the greats. He makes deeply human, moving films that are told with a great sense of patience. I find them to be so rewarding, and they really make me stew on a lot of ideas and feelings. There’s also something bittersweet about this being maybe the final piece of music from Ryuichi Sakamoto that we’ll ever get, another legend lost. I am very much looking forward to this.

Monster will be released in select theaters on November 22nd before expanding in the following weeks.

The Beekeeper

OK, I was not expecting this trailer to go where it did, and honestly, I am 100% here for it. This looks like David Ayer having a gnarly good time, and that’s when David Ayer is usually at his best. This looks very ridiculous, but that’s why you get a guy like Statham to deliver everything with as straight a face as possible. I’m very excited, this looks like my jam, can’t wait to see it.

The Beekeeper hits theaters on January 12th, 2024.

It’s A Wonderful Knife

It took me a second to realize that the plot is literally the plot of It’s A Wonderful Life, and the title wasn’t just a pun, it was a reflection on what the film itself was going to explore. Cute. I don’t think I’ve seen something so direct like that in a genre parody in a long while. I haven’t seen anything from Tyler MacIntyre, except for his segment on V/H/S/99, which I don’t remember at all, so I don’t really know what to expect here. I can see this being kinda iffy, but it could be good, we’ll have to wait and see.

It’s a Wonder Knife will be released in theaters on November 10th with a Shudder release at a later date.

Horizon: An American Saga

Hell yes, a big budget, probably super indulgent passion project that’s also a western, come on, it’s like Kevin Costner knew exactly what I wanted to see. Curious to see that this is also his first writing credit because he didn’t write any of his other films, as far as I’m aware. All I’ve read is that this takes place over several years thru the Civil War and westward expansion. Not much else outside of that. I’m totally sold, that’s for sure. Too bad we have to wait almost a year for it.

Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 will open in theaters on June 28th and Chapter 2 will be released on August 16th.

The Taste Of Things

I don’t believe I’ve seen anything from Tran Anh Hung, maybe I saw I Come With The Rain when I was young, but I don’t remember anything, but he has been on my list as a filmmaker to watch because his stuff looks really good. I will say the food porn is absolutely on point in this, I was getting hungry watching it, even looking at the stuff I wouldn’t normally eat. Plus, you can’t go wrong with Juliette Binoche. The trailer just has a really cool vibe, and I am really looking forward to see what the film itself will be like.

The Taste Of Things will have an awards-qualifying run in December 2023, then a limited opening on February 9th, 2024 before expanding on February 14, 2024.
