Morbius

This looks very silly. Within my limited exposure to this character in the comics, he didn’t do all that much for me despite a neat look and design, so I’m not sure what the appeal is going to be for doing a film about him. I mean, it definitely feels like it fits right alongside the whole vibe and aesthetic of Venom, so…maybe like that film the silliness will work in its advantage? Who even knows anymore. It’s got Jared Harris and Michael Keaton in it, so that makes me happy. So, sure, whatever, bring it on.

Morbius hits theaters on July 31st.

Stargirl

Boy, if I didn’t already know this is based on material that came out in the early 2000s, the fact that they’re playing the whole manic pixie dream girl trope completely straight basically confirms it. Although, I am willing to give this the slight benefit of the doubt because this is co-written and directed by Julia Hart, who made Fast Color last year, which was quite good, so I have to hope that she’s bringing some new angle or interesting element that just isn’t being advertised.

Stargirl will premiere on Disney+ on March 13th.

Sergio

So…there has been a bizarre trend I’ve noticed recently where documentary filmmakers make narrative versions of their own films, like just last year had The Kill Team and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile, and now Greg Barker is redoing his 2009 doc Sergio, but with actors this time. Granted, Wagner Moura and Ana De Armas are two spectacular actors, so I’m sure they’ll do a great job with this kind of material, but I can’t say the trailer did much to grab me.

Sergio will be available on Netflix on April 17th.

Ordinary Love

I don’t know where we all are when it comes to Liam Neeson after those bizarre comments he made last January, but putting that aside, this looks like a reasonably solid drama. From what I heard after its festival run, it’s one hell of a tearjerker, and I can totally see why here. I’m all for Lesley Manville, who has always delivered terrific performances through the years, so if there’s any reason for me to be excited for this, it’s probably because of her.

Ordinary Love will be released in theaters on February 14th.

Brahms: The Boy II

Remember The Boy? I do, and the problem with that is that knowing what happens in The Boy, the stuff happening in this trailer makes absolutely no sense, which is weird because it’s from the same team behind the first film. Look up the spoilers if you want, I don’t want to give them away, but this is so odd to me. It’s not like the first one was ever that good to begin with, and doing a sequel four years later is…yeah, just odd. That’s all I got.

Brahms: The Boy II will open in theaters on February 21st.

Devs

I don’t often spotlight shows on here, but I knew I had to for this. I was already sold on it before I even saw a frame. This is from Alex Garland, the writer/director behind Ex Machina and Annihilation, among other incredible films that he just has a writing credit on. This miniseries is, as far as I’m aware, completely written and directed by him, and he’s working with his usual collaborators. The trailer is certainly intriguing enough, and the cast assembled here looks terrific, so this is one of the few shows I’m definitely excited to catch this year.

Devs will premiere on FX/Hulu on March 5th.
