Mank

What a lovely trailer. Of course I’m excited for this, as I feel most would be when it comes to a new David Fincher film. But the personal element intrigues me, with it being written by his late father, and the film itself being about the industry, which Fincher has a bit of a rough start in. I’m curious to see how his experiences inform the vibe. The cast looks great, the movie looks great, not much else to say here, just that I’m bummed I won’t venture out to see it in a theater.

Mank hits select theaters in November before releasing on Netflix on December 4th.

Embattled

I’m into it. I like me some Stephen Dorff, and he looks great in this. This kind of masculine melodrama is something we don’t see a ton of, but when done well, they can be incredibly powerful. Warrior is practically considered a classic by this point, and I’m getting a few similar vibes here, and not just because it’s dealing with MMA. Some of the drama seems to lay it on real thick, but if the filmmakers are up to snuff, it might end up really compelling.

Embattled hits select theaters and VOD platforms on November 20th.

Wander Darkly

Interesting. Not totally sure what to make of this because from what I see, this could go either way. It could end up beautiful and emotional, but I can also see how it could end up not working at all. I am glad to see Sienna Miller in a lead role, I feel like I’ve only ever seen her as a supporting player, and I like Diego Luna as well. I hope it works out, I like it when films take big swings and play with big ideas, and even if it doesn’t work out, it might still be a fascinating watch.

Wander Darkly will release in select theaters and VOD platforms on December 11th.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

This looks really good, and man, I’m really missing Chadwick Boseman. At the same time, I do kinda hope his character doesn’t overshadow Ma Rainey, who was such a deeply fascinating and trailblazing figure, a real one-of-a-kind. It definitely looks like Netflix put a lot of money into this, which is great, and I love me a good period piece, so I’m very excited to see this. Both because it looks good, and for the chance to see Boseman perform one last time.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom opens in select theaters in November, and on Netflix on December 18th.

Raya And The Last Dragon

I don’t know if this happened to anyone else, but the music really stuck out to me. Don’t know if that’s part of the score, or a representation of the kind of music we’ll be hearing, but it’s really cool. And that goes double for the general aesthetics, I haven’t seen Southeast Asian culture get the Disney treatment before, and even if the general story pitch here seems a bit on the generic side, it looks really beautiful and it’s definitely one I’m looking forward to.

Raya And The Last Dragon opens in theaters on March 12th, 2021.

News Of The World

Paul Greengrass (cool) directing Tom Hanks (you have my attention) in a western! Alright, Greengrass, I’m officially excited for your movie. I love the western genre, and I love Tom Hanks, so of course this is going to appeal to me. The setup is simply, but I like the idea of him being this guy who travels the country to tell the news. It looks great, it doesn’t look like its overdoing the standard Greengrass shaky cam, and it’s promising some Tom Hanks gun fights, so yes, give this to me now.

News Of The World opens on December 25th.

Jungleland

So, I apparently saved the best trailer for last. Our second trailer that involves family and fighting, and honestly this looks really, really good. I haven’t even heard of this until I put it into our Trailer Talk, but now it’s one that I’m highly anticipating. There seems to be an artfulness and melancholy here that really appeals to me, and isn’t present in something like the Embattled trailer. Jack O’Connell’s a great actor, and I’ve warmed up to Charlie Hunnam quite a bit, and while I doubt he plays a huge role here, Jonathan Majors has become one of my favorite up-and-comers ever since I saw him in the excellent The Last Black Man In San Fransisco. This is one I’m very excited about, I hope it turns out good.

Jungleland opens on VOD platforms on November 10th.
