Lizzie
This is one hell of a trailer. I feel like the Lizzie Borden story is one of those American tales that has yet to receive a proper big screen treatment, though there were some TV movies over the years. With Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, I’m going to be on board regardless of the seemingly inaccurate interpretation of events because they’re incredible actors, and from the rather mixed word-of-mouth following Sundance, they have been said to be the highlights. I’m open to it, I dig true crime stuff, but I’m mostly in this for the actors involved.
Lizzie hits select theaters on September 14th.
The After Party
“From World Star Hip Hop?” That really threw me for a loop. Not sure how they’re involved, but this looks like it could be fun, even if I’ll maybe have a hard time knowing who some of these artists are, but it thankfully seems like they will say all the cameos’ names out loud. But yeah, it seems like a kind of movie I’ve seen a million times already, but as long as it’s funny, then it won’t be that big of a deal.
The After Party will hit Netflix on August 24th.
The Kindergarten Teacher
This looks intense, and I love the premise here. It’s almost like a far superior version of that Gifted movie that came out a couple years ago. It looks totally wild, and I dig movies that start one way, and take a weird turn. Plus, Maggie Gyllenhaal is great in basically everything she is in, and it looks like she has a role here where she’ll get a lot to chew on. This trailer honestly has me really excited, especially considering I haven’t heard much about this until now. Not a lot else to say here, but I am definitely looking forward to this.
The Kindergarten Teacher will available on Netflix October 12th.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
I’m pretty sure I mentioned it somewhere before, but I’ll say it again – sometimes you can just look at a movie, and know – regardless of overall quality – that it’s a total bomb. Not only does this look hella expensive, but the marketing has been remarkably lackluster. I am surprised they seem to be keen on showing off Morgan Freeman so much in this. Though, another interesting thing about this is that the directing credit will be shared between Lasse Hallstrom and Joe Johnston, which never, ever happens, and is kind of really big news for a movie that I don’t think many people will see. I did look up what it’s competition is, and while it might make some money the first weekend since it’s the only family movie to come out, the following week is The Grinch, and that will take the audience away from this easily. It just looks weird.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms will be released in theaters November 2nd.
Bel Canto
I don’t know about this. It’s so odd seeing people like Ken Watanabe and Julianne Moore in something that looks this disposable. I of course haven’t read the book it’s based on, and maybe the book fares better because I don’t see what separates this from any other hostage movie I’ve seen before. Plus, it’s so unlike anything filmmaker, Paul Weitz, has ever done, since the most dramatic he’s ever gotten was Grandma and Being Flynn, while typically being associated with stuff like American Pie and About a Boy. It’s just not looking too good.
Bel Canto will be released in select theaters on September 14 before being available on VOD on September 21st.
Maniac
After the first season of True Detective, Cary Fukunaga has earned the attention to pretty much anything he’ll make going forward. This is his new series, Maniac (not to be confused with the 1980 slasher or its 2012 remake), and it looks wild, like something that would’ve came out in the mid-to-late 70s. All that’s been given in terms of plot details is just that two strangers are brought in for a pharmaceutical trial, and things don’t go well. I’m digging the vibe, even if it kind of reminds me of the show, Legion, which I don’t care for, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for this one.
Maniac will begin streaming on Netflix on September 21st.
Foxtrot Six
Don’t worry, I had no idea what this was when I first saw it, but I was so intrigued I simply had to look it up. It’s an Indonesian action movie directed by first-timer, Randy Korompis, and it is being backed by Mario Kassar, a Hollywood producer who was apart of films like a bunch of the Terminator and Rambo films, he;s a pretty big deal, and this film is also co-produced by Ario Sagantoro, who produced
Foxtrot Six doens’t have a release date yet, but it will be sometime in 2019.
