Irresistible

When I heard Jon Stewart was making a political comedy, I was excited. I think his perspective and humor and empathy is genuinely missed. His directorial debut, Rosewater, was a flawed, but mostly solid effort. Having seen the trailer…I am not as excited. Everything about this trailer feels like one of those tacky, toothless movies from the mid-2000s like Man Of The Year and Swing Vote. It just looks so dated, and doesn’t really reflect the current political landscape that I’m seeing out there. I do like the cast, so I’m hoping this is just a case of a bad trailer.

Irresistible hits theaters on May 29th.

Premature

This looks lovely! What I love most about what I see here is how vibrant the colors are. Typically, films set in cities will either be muted or have tints of browns, greys, and blues. I like the film stock look, and those Richard Linklater-esque hangout vibes where you have a fairly straightforward story, but it’s populated by these colorful, endearing characters. This one definitely has my curiosity.

Premature will release in select theaters and VOD platforms on February 21st.

Swallow

I feel like Haley Bennet has always been one of the more underrated performers out there, so it’s really cool to see her take center stage on something so strange and bold and dark. The David Fincher comparison is pretty high praise. I’m absolutely hooked by the trailer, and very interested in seeing where it goes as soon as it comes out.

Swallow will be released in select theaters and VOD platforms on March 6th.

Mr. Jones

The story behind this is certainly interesting. I’m sadly not super familiar with neither the details of this part of history nor the works of the prominent Polish filmmaker, Agnieszka Holland. But this definitely has my attention. I dig movies that are all about bringing out lesser known stories from big moments in history, and while the trailer doesn’t mention it, the story that transpires here is what inspired George Orwell to write Animal Farm. Looks cool to me, can’t wait to see it.

Mr. Jones will be released on a currently unspecified date in April.

Charm City King

Super short trailer, but it gets to the point, and I’m really into it. What caught my eye was seeing Barry Jenkins’ name pop up with a Story By credit. So, if he had a hand in the making of this film, that’s all I need to be excited. The story does look compelling, and some of the cinematography on the motorcycle sequences look really good. Not sure what to expect from this, especially since I haven’t seen the documentary, 12 O’Clock Boys, that this is based on, but I’m looking forward to it.

Charm City Kings opens in theaters on April 10th.

The Wild Goose Lake

Saw this trailer, and I just had to include it. A hyperstylized Chinese neo-noir about a dude on the run? Sounds like a great time to me, and it looks gorgeous. Not much else to say about it. Looks cool as hell, and I can’t wait to see it.

Wild Goose Lake will open in select theaters starting March 6th.
