In The Earth

I dig it! I’m always going to be curious about a new Ben Wheatley project, I really like most of his body of work. While his take on Rebecca didn’t do much for me, I am curious to see him go back to his horror roots with this. I have heard some mixed word-of-mouth, but that’s pretty much to be expected with a Wheatley film, and I’ve otherwise avoided most of the chatter about this since I want to go into this knowing as little as possible. Joel Fry is not an actor I’m super familiar with, but I did enjoy him in Yesterday, and he looks compelling from the bits I see here. Don’t know what to expect, but I can’t wait to see it.

In The Earth will hit theaters on April 23rd.

Stowaway

This is the latest film from Joe Penna, who made this really solid survival film a couple years back called Arctic, starring Mads Mikkelsen, and I gotta say, I’m really looking forward to this. Obviously, anyone who has been reading my stuff here knows I love me a space movie, but I’m also just really happy to see one of these movies that doesn’t involve an alien killing a bunch of people, or a having a crew go crazy and killing each other for no reason. Everyone seems to get along, and they’re working together to solve a problem. It feels so fresh, and this cast is good. This is one I can’t wait to check out.

Stowaway hits Netflix on April 22nd.

Four Good Days

Not a fan of how heavy handed this trailer is, especially with the song choice, but trying to look past that, I think there’s definitely some potential here. Mila Kunis has real acting chops, and it’s too bad she doesn’t do a ton of drama, but it’s cool seeing her bounce off heavyweights like Glenn Close and Stephen Root. This is yet another film about the opioid crisis, and it seems to offer an intimate look at this, as opposed to exploring the institutions surrounding it, which is fine. I can’t say this looks great, but I’ll give it a shot.

Four Good Days opens in select theaters on April 30th and VOD platforms on May 21st.

Finding You

This looks fine, I guess. Pretty paint-by-numbers romance. I guess the Irish setting is definitely less insulting than when we had it in that Wild Mountain Thyme movie. This feels lot more charming and low-key compared to that. Not much else I can observe here, it is promising something pretty simple and straightforward. Maybe I’ll give it a look.

Finding You hits theaters on May 14th.

Drunk Bus

I have to give major props to any trailer that has a “Featuring Music By” text card. I love that. This trailer seems rather promising. I have heard some good word-of-mouth from the festival run of this, but I don’t know much about it. It seems like a hangout movie where we meet these colorful characters in our lead’s journey as this driver, which is a neat conceit. I haven’t seen Ozark, so I don’t know much about how good Charlie Tahan, but he seems solid here, as does the rest of the cast. Seems like a neat flick to put on your radar.

Drunk Bus will be released in virtual cinemas and VOD platforms on May 21st.

The Nevers

Joss Whedon has stepped down as the showrunner on this project, which is being heavily advertised as of late, and it’s why his name doesn’t appear anywhere in the marketing. Though, he still has directing and writing credits on numerous episodes. I imagine it’s not the best time for anything related to Whedon to come out considering the hype behind Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the allegations from Ray Fisher. Although, based on the comments, it seems like people are liking what they’re seeing here. There’s definitely some cool moments, but not enough for me to really want to invest my time in. I’m very picky with TV shows, and unless this proves to be something really special, I’m probably not going to see it.

The Nevers will premiere on HBO and HBO Max starting April 11th.
