Hustlers

This looks really promising. It’s definitely new territory for writer/director, Lorene Scafaria, and it looks like she’s really bringing it with this. I like the vibe, the cast looks game, and the idea behind is cool and interesting. Yeah, I’m looking forward to this one.

Hustlers opens in theaters on September 13th.

The King’s Man

I was not too fond of The Golden Circle, but I did enjoy the nasty fun of the first Kingman movie. I can’t say I was looking forward to this, but I did find myself liking what I saw here. It certainly helps that I really like Ralph Fiennes a lot, especially when he dives into something unexpected like comedy (which there surprisingly wasn’t much of here), and seeing him doing action is just delightful. I’m definitely more interested in this than I was before I saw this teaser.

The King’s Man hits theaters on February 14th, 2020.

Monos

I somehow haven’t heard much of this, I guess it sort of slipped through the cracks when it opened at Sundance, but I love the way this looks. I’m not sure what is going on aside from broad strokes inspired from Lord of the Flies, but it looks really cool. And the best part for me is Mica Levi doing the score. I don’t know what to expect here, but I’m excited.

Monos opens in theaters on September 13th.

Playing With Fire

I mean…points for using that Social Distortion cover of “Ring of Fire,” I guess. This is very much not for me at all. Though, I do think there is a weird charm in seeing that “big, strong guy takes care of little kid” genre is alive and well, and I hope it continues to do so.

Playing With Fire opens in theaters on November 8th.

Vita And Virginia

Gemma Arterton and Elizabeth Debicki playing lovers in a period piece? Yeah, that’s about all I need to be sold on it. I’m not all too familiar with the story of Virginia Woolf and her relationship with Vita Sackville-West, but the trailer really has me intrigued. Debicki has been one of those actors who keeps popping up recently, and doing wonderful work, like in Widows for example. The word-of-mouth on this isn’t very promising, which is unfortunate, but I’ll give it a shot.

Vita And Virginia will be released in select theaters on August 23rd and VOD platforms on August 30th.

The Red Sea Diving Resort

Hmm…I like Chris Evans a lot, but I don’t know about this. I don’t mean to throw in such a loaded term, but there is a very white savior vibe I’m getting from this that I’m not super into. I’m sure it’ll be a perfectly serviceable thriller, but nothing that will stick with me anytime soon.

The Red Sea Diving Resort will be available on Netflix on July 31st.

Paradise Hills

I’m not entirely sure what I just watched, but boy, it sure looked very pretty. I have no idea what to expect from this, and seeing Nacho Vigalondo with a co-writing credit is really intriguing. The cast is random, but I do like everyone here. It’s especially cool seeing Milla Jovovich in something that isn’t one of her husband’s action movies. I’m very interested in this one.

Paradise Hills opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on November 1st.

Don’t Let Go

These kind of thrillers that play with time can be a lot of fun, and I don’t think I recall seeing any take this specific approach with getting a call from someone in the past. It makes no sense, obviously, but it’s still interesting, and I can see how a filmmaker can get a lot of mileage – both in emotional resonance and suspense – out of it. Plus, when you got someone like David Oyelowo in the lead, I’m already sold.

Don’t Let Go hits theaters on August 30th.

3 From Hell

Rob Zombie is a filmmaker that I really want to like because he clearly knows his stuff, especially when it comes to horror. However, I was never satisfied in much of his work, with the sole exception being The Devil’s Rejects, which I absolutely love. That connection alone makes me interested in this, but I’m keeping my expectations in check. The trailer isn’t doing it any favors since it’s so choppy and cheap looking, but I hope he surprises me.

3 From Hell will play in select theaters on September 16th, 17th and 18th courtesy of Fathom Events.
