Hold The Dark

Any new Jeremy Saulnier movie is worth celebrating. He is among my favorite directors working right now, and this looks like it’ll be a great addition to his small but stellar filmography. Plus, it’s awesome seeing Jeffrey Wright as the star here. He’s always been on the sidelines in most of the things I’ve seen him in, but he can clearly carry a film. This has some Wind River meets Wickerman vibes, I don’t know if that’s accurate to what it will be, but it’s definitely an interesting pitch. Even with all the stuff we’re shown here, I’m still not entirely sure what’s going on, and that’s a good thing. I can’t wait.

Hold The Dark will be released on Netflix September 28th.

Outlaw King

I can’t remember the last time we got a really good one of these, the sort of gritty old English (or in this case Scottish) action epic. It’s cool to see one of these again, and it actually looks really good on top of that. David Mackenzie is a great director, and the fact that he’s working with Chris Pine after they collaborated on Hell or High Water is making me even more excited. Plus, the supporting cast is rock solid as well, I’m especially looking forward to Florence Pugh, who was wonderful in Lady Macbeth. So, yeah, this is one I’m really looking forward to.

Outlaw King will hit select theaters and Netflix on November 9th.

Slice

This might be the silliest thing I’ve seen that A24 logo on, and I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. This looks pretty wild, and I’m hoping it doesn’t dive too far into the whole Adult Swim anti-humor thing that I can see bits of here. The casting is certainly great, and it looks like it’s going hard on that whole 80s B-movie vibe, so consider me intrigued.

The release date for Slice has not been announced, but it will be released in theaters later this year.

Suspiria

Yup, still really into this. I’ve already said everything I wanted to say about this project when I talked about the teaser awhile back. This doesn’t change much. Just gonna say, I’m keeping my fingers crossed. This could be something really cool.

Suspiria will release in select theaters October 26th before expanding nationwide on November 2nd.

Big Brother

What if Donnie Yen was your teacher? Yeah, that’s literally all I would need to be interested in this. Sure, it looks like fluff, but any excuse to see Yen kick ass and be super charming is a good one, and this looks like it could be a really fun time. That’s all I got to say on that.

Big Brother will hit select theaters on August 31st.

The Man Who Feels No Pain

This looks like a blast. A hyper violent slapstick sort-of-superhero comedy about guy who learns to fight and help others because he can’t feel pain, that sounds awesome. It’s written and directed by Vasan Bala, and while I haven’t seen his directorial debut 2012’s Peddlers, he has done some work on films that I really love like The Lunchbox, Bombay Velvet, and Raman Raghav 2.0. If his contributions to those films are of any indications, then we’ll be in for a treat with this.

The Man Who Feels No Pain will be playing at TIFF, and has no domestic release date yet.
