Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard

I didn’t think The Hitman’s Bodyguard was all that great, so I would assume that this wouldn’t appeal to me, but I’m honestly digging what I see here. Even though it doesn’t look that different from the first, I mean, the same creative team is still behind it. Maybe it’s because these kinds of mid-budget action movies rarely get the big screen treatment these days, and I’ll take what I can get. But it does look like a lot of fun. I’m not holding my breath for this, but I will look forward to hopefully seeing this in the theater. I’m getting the second dose of the COVID vaccine soon, and I’ll be carefully venturing back to the theaters. And this looks like it’ll be a good time on the big screen.

Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard hits theaters on June 16th.

The Water Man

This is David Oyelowo’s directorial debut. He’s an actor I like quite a bit, and he’s worked with many amazing directors throughout his career, so I would imagine he would pick up some tips along the way. This is definitely different, but I like the combination of realism and fantasy/fairy tale elements. It’s a hard combo to get right, and I’ve seen my fair share of movies like this that don’t pan out well. Hopefully, Oyelowo avoids the usual pitfalls, and makes something that doesn’t overdo the whole “it’s a metaphor, you see” angle that these tend to do. It looks cool, and I’m really curious if he pulls it off.

The Water Man will be released in theaters on May 7th.

Seance

I’ve been anticipating this for a while since it’s the directorial debut of Simon Barrett, who is a regular collaborator with Adam Wingard, who recently did Godzilla Vs. Kong, and I generally really like their work together. The trailer certainly intrigues me, and the setup is compelling enough. And while she has been in films I’ve enjoyed, Suki Waterhouse is not an actor I find particularly exciting, though she seems fine enough in what we see here. This is a film I’ll definitely be checking out regardless, and I hope it turns out great for Simon.

Seance opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on May 21st.

Eat Wheaties!

In an interesting reversal, this kind of reminds me of a Bollywood film from a little over a decade back called Billu, which was about this barber in a small village who claims to have been childhood friends with this superstar actor, but no one buys it, and folks even ridicule him for it. I’m sure any similarities end there, it was just an amusing thought. This looks cute, and it’s got some really good actors. I can’t recall seeing Tony Hale in a lead role before, but he looks endearing here. I was worried the film would go into unintentionally creepy territory, but it seems like it won’t. I think I might just give this a look when it’s out.

Eat Wheaties! will open in select theaters and VOD platforms on April 30th.

Limbo

This is a pleasant surprise. This somehow hadn’t fallen on my radar up until this point, but I’m glad I know about it now because this looks terrific. I don’t know much about filmmaker Ben Sharrock, but this trailer made me laugh, and it seems to have plenty of style to it as well. I like the use of this 4:3 aspect ratio. It’s so visually pleasing, despite the murky colors. I believe this got a few BAFTA nominations, which is nice, and it certainly makes me more curious to check it out.

Limbo opens in theaters on April 30th.

Spirit Untamed

Is Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron that big of a recognizable IP that DreamWorks had to make a sequel almost two decades after the original? I don’t remember anything from that film, and from what I can recall, it was generally met with a shrug. However,  the biggest thing that sticks out with this is the animation. It doesn’t look bad, but it does look like DreamWorks handed this project to their TV division, it just looks cheap to me. After doing a bit of research, this story is apparently based on a Netflix show that was inspired by the film, and yes, this was made with a lower budget. Not sure why DreamWorks went this route, but who knows, maybe it’ll be good, I’m certainly not in the target demographic. Spirit Untamed opens in theaters on June 4th.
