Her Smell

Between last year’s Vox Lux, and now Her Smell, it’s cool that we’re getting to see a female version of the “tortured artist” archetype that is usually dominated in stories by men. I didn’t totally love Vox Lux, but I thought the character that Natalie Portman plays was very interesting and compelling to watch. The same goes here, Elizabeth Moss looks fantastic, the supporting cast is surprisingly stacked. This looks really cool, and the word on this has gotten me curious about it for a while. I can’t wait to check it out.

Her Smell will open in select theaters on April 12th.

Hail Satan?

This documentary premiered at Sundance back in January, and the word-of-mouth has been pretty solid. It does look a bit pedestrian to me, but for people out there who don’t fully understand what the Church of Satan is exactly, this might be a fun way to inform them of what their ideals are, and the principles they stand for. As someone with a basic understanding of them, I don’t know if I’ll get much out of it, but it still looks like it can be a neat watch.

Hail Satan? will open in select theaters on April 19th.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote

After all this time, after literal decades of setbacks and losses and shutdowns, Terry Gilliam finally makes his passion project, which only led to further setbacks and lawsuits, but now, after everything has been cleared up…the film will get a one-night release. I suppose any filmmaker would be grateful just to get that opportunity, but considering everything Gilliam went through, to have this end up as a one-night Fathom Events screening feels like the punch line to some grand, cosmic joke, which does feel rather Gilliam-esque now that I think about it. I’m just curious to see what this is all about. It’s rare for passion projects like this to see the light of day, so whatever it is, it’s an oddity worth checking out.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote will have a one-night theatrical event on April 10th.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

I was honestly sold on the first trailer, but there’s not many other previews from this past week, so I figured I’d talk about this new trailer. I mentioned that I was never a big fan of the Pokémon franchise, it just never grabbed me like it did other kids my age. However, just as a weird little mystery adventure story with a bonkers reality, this looks super fun. I do think the reveal of Mewtwo was a big mistake, I think that would’ve been a brilliant surprise reveal in the film, but whatever. I’m honestly hoping this is good for Justice Smith’s sake. He’s such a good actor, and the recent Jurassic World did him so wrong.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will hit theaters on May 10th.

The Irishman

Boy, that sure looks like a teaser that was conceptualized and rendered in half an hour. But I guess I can’t be too mad, it’s a new Scorsese film after all. I’ve been highly anticipating this since it was announced, and granted, I’m always excited for whatever Scorsese has cooking up, but the fact that this stars the likes of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, it’s like the gangster movie to end all gangster movies. I can barely contain my excitement, even if this teaser shows us absolutely nothing.

The Irishman has no release date announced yet, but it will be sometime this coming fall.

Dark Phoenix

I almost forgot to put this here, but could ya blame me? I mean, at this point, I just kinda feel bad for this franchise. It simply couldn’t catch up with the times, and kept repeating its own story beats and imagery. Hell, clearly the people marketing this don’t seem to care, they gave away a massive spoiler before even hitting the first minute of the trailer. I’d like to hope they at least have go out on one last hurrah before getting swallowed up by the Disney machine, but the word on the street is that it’s a disaster, which may have some truth to it, or maybe it’s simply exaggeration. We’ll find out soon enough. Still no word on what’s gonna happen to that New Mutants movie.

Dark Phoenix will be released on June 7th.
