Greyhound
Tom Hanks’ first screenwriting credit since…2011’s Larry Crowne. Consider me intrigued. I’m a touch confused regarding the whole “Based On Actual Events” thing because the film is adapted from a novel, The Good Shepherd, which appears to be a work of fiction. Though, I suppose that novel was inspired by real events of the Battle of the Atlantic from the war. Either way, I don’t think we necessarily need more WWII movies, but if Hanks sees something in this story that motivated him enough to write it, I suppose it’s worth giving a shot.
Greyhound hits theaters on June 12th.
Connected
If Phil Lord and Chris Miller are involved, I am automatically sold. Their track record, even as producers, has been great, and I’m glad that they are getting as many opportunities as they are following their success with Into The Spider-Verse. This looks fun, the animation style is unique, and I’m curious about it being from Michael Rianda, who was a part of the crew behind Gravity Falls, a show that I loved. Normally, any movie that seems like it wants to say something about technology and especially the younger generation’s relation to it is an immediate turn-off for me, but I suspect the filmmakers have something genuinely clever up their sleeve here. I’m excited.
Connected will open in theaters on September 18th.
The Other Lamb
I like me a good cult movie, and this looks like…a good one. Raffey Cassidy has been impressing me in everything I’ve seen her in from stuff like Tomorrowland to The Killing Of A Sacred Deer to Vox Lux. The setup for this is certainly nothing particularly new, but it’s a subject matter that always intrigues me, and it looks gnarly as hell. It’s probably not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m sold.
The Other Lamb will open in select theaters and VOD platforms on April 3rd.
The High Note
This looks amusing. I like Tracee Ellis Ross, I like Dakota Johnson, I even saw a glimpse of Kelvin Harrison Jr. in the trailer, he’s great, and I think Nisha Ganatra did a solid job helming Late Night last year, so it’s cool seeing an Indian filmmaker continue to get work. I can’t say this is one I’m highly anticipating, but I do hope it ends up being a good time.
The High Note will be released in theaters on May 8th.
Artemis Fowl
Damn, I think the fans are pissed. Look at the downvotes on the YouTube page. I didn’t realize Artemis Fowl had such a passionate fanbase…or even much of a fanbase in general. I didn’t know Colin Farrell was in this, that makes me a bit more interested. The rest of it…still does absolutely nothing for me, despite Kenneth Branagh being at the helm here. Who knows, this might be a pleasant surprise, I don’t like writing anything off, especially just because of a trailer, but…I’m not getting good vibes from this at all.
Artemis Fowl will open in theaters on May 29th.
I Know This Much Is True
I figured this would be an interesting addition to today’s Trailer Talk since this miniseries is being entirely co-written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, the guy behind Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond The Pines, and The Light Between The Oceans…you know, fun stuff. I’m not familiar with the book it’s based on, but based on what I’m seeing here, it definitely feels like it fits nicely in Cianfrance’s wheelhouse of emotionally draining domestic dramas. Ruffalo is great, and the cast assembled here is enticing as well, and considering it’s a miniseries, I might actually give this a watch if I hear good things.
I Know This Much Is True will premiere on HBO on April 27th.
