Godzilla Vs. Kong
I was more positive on Godzilla: King Of The Monsters than most people seemed to have been, and while the frustrations I had with the film still apply, the stuff I enjoyed about it, I enjoyed even more as time has passed. With a couple exceptions, I do mostly like the films from Adam Wingard, I think The Guest in particular is an indisputable classic, and I’m curious to see how he fares in a big budget environment. As far as the trailer goes, it’s certainly not as awe-inspiring as that first Godzilla: King Of The Monsters trailer, but I do really like what I see here. Seeing Kong in chains do make me lean more on his side, but I also don’t like having to choose between these two cinematic giants. I can’t wait for this, and I really hope by its release, things will slowly go back to normal because I would hate to miss out on seeing this on the big screen.
Godzilla vs. Kong will open in theaters as well as HBO Max for 31 days on March 31st.
The Courier
This looks neat. I like a good Cold War thriller, and it’s kinda refreshing to see Benedict Cumberbatch play a character who doesn’t totally have it together, someone significantly more vulnerable than the kinds of characters he usually plays. The rest of the cast looks pretty stacked as well. In looking up info about the movie, I kind of unwittingly spoiled myself as to how things turned out for the guy Cumberbatch is playing, but I’m now a bit more curious to see if the film dives into the stuff I read because it could make for something really interesting. I can’t say I have high expectations for this, but I’ll be checking it out.
The Courier will open in theaters on March 19th.
Raya And The Last Dragon
I really like what I see here. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for a Disney animated film. And I’m not saying that because their recent output is bad or anything, but this brings a totally different vibe than a lot of their previous films. I genuinely don’t know what to expect here, and I like that. Can’t say I’m super fond of what Awkwafina is doing here, but everything else looks great. I love the Southeast Asian influence, and I like the idea that this is going to be this big action packed adventure. We might even get more action than we did in the Mulan (original, not the remake). I can’t wait to see this.
Raya And The Last Dragon opens in theaters and Premier Access on Disney+ on March 5th.
Willy’s Wonderland
The Five Nights At Freddy’s movie has been stuck in developmental hell since 2015, and we already got the knockoff before the real thing even comes out. Although, to this film’s defense, this looks like so much fun. I’m always in when Nicolas Cage is involved, I’ve made it clear before that he is genuinely one of my favorite actors. Curious that he has zero lines in this trailer. Anyway, it looks ridiculous, but it looks ridiculous in a good way. I’ll definitely be seeing this when it comes out.
Willy’s Wonderland opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on February 12th.
I Care A Lot
This is one I haven’t heard about prior to the trailer coming out, but it definitely has my attention now. I love dark comedies, but it is a tricky and finicky subgenre, and when done poorly, it can be tedious and obnoxious. The trailer comes close to rubbing me the wrong way, but I think it’s just the way they’re trying to make this look and feel as exciting and quirky as possible when there’s a possibility the film itself will be a bit more understated. Rosamund Pike playing this kind of role is great to me, I loved her in Gone Girl as many folks did, and I can’t wait to see how she handles this kind of character.
I Care A Lot hits Netflix on February 19th.
Flora And Ulysses
This doesn’t look bad, but it doesn’t seem like it will be my cup of tea. However, I’m glad to see Lena Khan get more work. She directed a lovely little film several year ago called The Tiger Hunter, which starred Danny Pudi, who we see in the trailer for this, and I’m just happy to see more South Asians behind the camera. As far as the film itself, it’s almost like someone made a movie based on that one post I saw on Twitter where it said squirrels land like superheroes when they fall (yes, I know it’s based on a book). I don’t know if that factoid is true, but it certainly makes for some cute imagery as we see here. Don’t know if I’ll get around to this one, but it looks like solid family friendly fare.
