God’s Country

I like the looks of this, these types of thrillers are right up my alley. Plus it’s cool to see Thandiwe Newton take the lead in something like this. I wonder if there’s more to the proceedings than they’re showing us here, or if it really is as simple as it seems to be. Either way, it looks engaging and tense as all hell. I believe this is Julian Higgins’ feature debut as a filmmaker after doing shorts and TV. Definitely looking forward to this one.

God’s Country opens in theaters on September 16th.

Glorious

Been hearing about this one for a while, though I haven’t looked into what it was about. This is not what I expected it would be, but I am so here for it. This looks hilarious and weird and gnarly, and I have no idea where this setup could possibly go. I hope that it actually delivers, and that the joke doesn’t wear out after the first few minutes. Because I can see it going either way. I’ll be cautiously optimistic though, especially with someone like J.K. Simmons doing the voice like that. I just have to see this.

Glorious will stream exclusively on Shudder starting August 18th.

I Came By

This is the third film from Babak Anvari who made the incredible Under The Shadow, and the not so incredible Wounds. I actually quite liked this trailer, though I think it goes a bit too long and gives away just a bit more than I feel it needed to. There’s a cool setup here, and it seems like the kinda thing I think people would enjoy if something like Don’t Breathe was too sleazy for them. I like these actors, and it looks fairly well made and without that “Netflix look,” so consider me excited for this.

I Came By hits Netflix on August 31st.

Spirit Halloween: The Movie

No, that isn’t a coincidence, this is actually meant to be a film that is based around the pop-up store that we’re all familiar with. I have a feeling people are roasting this, and I can see why, it does look cheap and corny, just like the store itself come to think of it. But I can’t get too mad at a horror film that is aimed at kids. They rarely get those nowadays, and while I don’t think I’d enjoy watching this, I think it looks perfectly adequate and suitable for younger audiences. Not much else to say, but it is what it is.

Spirit Halloween: The Movie will hit VOD platforms on October 11th.

Hold Me Tight

Looks solid. Like a lot of folks, I was really impressed with Vicky Krieps in Phantom Thread, and I’ve been hoping to see her pop up in things more, but it seems like she hasn’t blown up like I would have thought, appearing in only a handful of films and few of them being leads. This looks like a meaty role, so I’m glad to see her tackle something as complex as this. I don’t believe I’ve seen anything directed by Mathieu Amalric, so this will be an interesting watch on that respect as well. Perhaps some catching up is in order.

Hold Me Tight opens in select theaters on September 9th.

Oppenheimer

Didn’t get to include this teaser last week, so putting it here. Yeah, I’m looking forward to this. That’s all I got. Not a lot to go on. The few bits we see look cool, I’m excited to see how Nolan utilizes IMAX with black and white, and I’m curious just how he’s going to approach this story, and how his impulses as a master of spectacle will factor in, if at all. Plus, you know, Cillian Murphy is going to kill this, so happy to see him lead a film like this, and the rest of the cast is pretty stacked too. So, yeah, I got high hopes for this one.

Oppenheimer opens in theaters on July 21st, 2023.
