Gemini Man

Look, all I need is Ang Lee’s name to get me interested in a new movie, add Will Smith fighting a younger clone of himself, and now you really got me excited. This is also Lee doing another experiment with high frame rate filmmaking after doing it with Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, which I think utilized the technology in a compelling way. I’m very curious to see how it’s done here. Granted, the trailer itself seems like standard Bruckheimer action schlock, which makes me curious what Lee saw in the project, but then again, I like me some action schlock, so whatever this ends up being, I’m excited to find out when it comes out.

Gemini Man will hit theaters on October 11th.

See You Yesterday

Man, that looks stylish as hell. It’s fascinating to see this after recently seeing the Twilight Zone episode “Replay,” which I think is the best episode so far, and that deals with time travel done in order to prevent a death in the hands of the police. Spike Lee being attached as a producer is super promising, apparently being a mentor of sorts for the director, Stefon Bristol. I’m very curious to see how this one turns out.

See You Yesterday will hit Netflix on May 17th.

Men In Black: International

I don’t know, I don’t think this looks bad necessarily, but I’m just so underwhelmed by it. The editing and pacing in the trailer is so frantic that I can’t really latch onto much. I do dig some of the story and character beats here, so I’m hoping it’s just the way the trailer is edited that makes me not feel it that much. Plus, there’s a few fun gags like the steering wheel one that are cool. F. Gary Gray is a solid enough director, so I’m sure this will at least be fun, and have some decent action.

Men In Black: International will open in theaters on June 14th.

21 Bridges

Meh. This looks like another one of those generic thrillers from the 90s, and not necessarily one of the good ones. But it does have a good enough cast that it might end up somewhat compelling in spite of itself. I mean, after making all the money from those Avengers movies, with all the clout they gained from their success, and their first big effort as producers is…a standard dad action movie? Alright, it’s their money, I guess. I don’t think this looks unwatchable or anything like that, but I’ve seen a million movies like this, and I’m not seeing anything that stands out.

21 Bridges will hit theaters on July 12th.

Shadow

Those are some deadly umbrellas. Man, this looks stunning, and I wouldn’t expect anything less from Zhang Yimou. He’s made some great movies, but it’s cool to see him return to the kind of territory he’s explored in movies like Hero and House of Flying Daggers. I’ve been meaning to catch up on some of his early work, so I might get around to that in anticipation for this.

Shadows will open in select theaters starting May 3rd.

When They See Us

https://youtu.be/u3F9n_smGWY

Ava DuVernay has becomes one of the most impactful filmmakers in recent memory, and I’ve been casually following the production of this since it was announced. The cast assembled here is really strong, and as someone who only knows about the case in passing, it could be a compelling dive into that, as well as the cultural context surrounding it. This is definitely one I’m looking forward to.

When They See Us will begin streaming on Netflix on May 31st.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

I’ve already talked about this before, so I have nothing more to add. It looks awesome, so I figured I’d post it here because it’s just that good.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters will open in theaters on May 31st.
